Transport NSW Finally Trialling Fully Digital Opal Cards

As seen in this article by Transport NSW, Opal digital card is being trialled.
Eligibility for this includes paying a full fare adult card so atm not that much different than tapping on with your credit card but it's good to see public transport catching up with the technology.

Hopefully we will see this soon drip down to all Opal cards.

Question is, will you use it or prefer the physical card if you even use Opal anymore

Uh, why are you interested in public transport ticket options if you don't use it?

      • -1

        I'm not.

It's always recommend that an other option is included in a survey to allow people the provide their own response. I don't use public transport is the other option.

        • +4

This is not a poll about how many people use public transport lol.
It's just like saying "What's your favourite feature of Android 11" and then listing "iOS" as an option.

Where is the option for I don't use public transport?

Just stay away for these post then, would you post similar response in condom/tampon related post!

    • My goodness.

      • So much hate for people that don’t have access to public transport or can’t use it for other reasons.

I'd love it if it shows my opal activity in real time. Tapping with credit card is so unreliable, I have been charged more than the fare several times - and to make it worse, you only see $1 authorisation charge for 3-5 days.

I was pretty excited to hear the news yesterday until I realised it would be done through Samsung Pay, Google Pay or Apple Pay instead of their own Opal app. I don't use these payment methods by choice so I guess I'll be sticking to the plastic cards. Can we get an option in the poll for that? 😅

    • It seems that only Samsung users are eligible for the trial at the moment, going by the criteria for the trial … In Melbourne, any Android phone can use mobile myki (provided it has NFC, of course) as they use Google Pay.

    • Yeh, I agree with you and would have preferred it to be done via the Opal app. Having it in Samsung Pay or Google Pay is a bit inconvenient as opal would need to be swapped with the credit card every time. Easier to put up with the regular wrongly charged CC.

That's not necessarily a problem. The way Woolworths Rewards works on Google Pay, it'll always bring up the Woolworths card (if you tap when checkout is prompting for it) without you needing to select anything. This could work the same way.

        • Many thanks for the tip. That'll be handy. Had been using Samsung Pay up til now for Woolworths Rewards with the barcode scanner.

          • @skid: I think a problem you might run into is Google and Samsung Pay don't coexist very well, the last time I checked. One or the other is set as default for NFC pay, and the non-default one will only work while you have the app open.

Of course, this Woolworths rewards behaviour only works while Google Pay is default/open/active.

Are you Associated or Employee? 🤔

    • Neither lol just forget my opal card way too much tbh

      • not kept with your phone (a card slot on the case)?

        • Nope, have a clear case and not a flip cover - adds too much bulk
Tried in my wallet but that's too much stuffing around at the gates
Now it just lives under my keys so I most likely see it before I leave

Still got my original card from 2014. Can't wait to finally get rid of it.

  • Doesnt Google/Apple take 30% of in-app payments? So isn't this a new tax, though paid by the NSW government?

    • +2

Don't worry. The NSW government will introduce a surcharge when there are enough users.

    • In Google Play yes. Not Google Pay. Unless you are suggesting that paying through an Opal app would could as an in-app purchase? I wonder if that's the case with the Myki app, I highly doubt it though

  • Ah damn… looks like the trial at least is only for Apple or Samsung Pay. I'm on a Samsung device but using Google Pay on it, so not supported (yet?).

  • I don't fully understand, I've been paying through Google Pay the last year or so, so is this just an extension to also include Apple and Samsung Pay?

    • +1

What you would have been doing for the last year or so is paying through your credit card, as exposed via Google Pay.

This is talking about support for an actual Opal card.

An Opal card still has a couple advantages over a credit card:

      • Instant reporting (credit card has significant delays)
      • Easier refunds
  • Finally! Hopefully we will be able to use Express Travel Pass on iPhone like it works for ages in Japan and other countries.

  • As usual, Queensland is stuck in the past. We're going to have our smart ticketing solution rolled out in 2022 (I think they're trialling it in parts of the Goldie at the moment)
