Chromecast with Google TV - USB Hub?

I bought a new Chromecast recently and so far so good. Although I've been wanting to get a USB Hub so I can still connect my USB hard drive to it. The couple I've tried either didn't deliver enough power to keep the Chromecast running, or just simply didn't want to read my hard drive (hard drive light is on so it's "on", also works when connecting the hub to my laptop).

Has anyone bought a USB hub for theirs that works properly?

Also yes my hard drive is FAT32.

  • Does your hard drive has its own power supply? Or is it a USB powered model?

If it’s got it’s own power supply the issue is not with the TV not delivering enough power.

If USB powered the only option would be to buy a powered USB hub and put that in the middle. A powered USB hub will have its own peer supply that needs to be connected to the wall rather than just USB ports (and it will cost more).

    • I got a hub that has power delivery, so the Chromecast is powered up fine. But no my hard drive doesn't have its own power supply. Do you reckon i'd still need yet another powered hub, even though the hub already has power delivery?

It's weird as the light is on for my hard drive, but still won't "connect".

Also worth noting that even my small USB stick doesn't get recognised.

  • May be you wanna try this USBC HUB

LENTION USB-C Multi-Port Hub with 4K HDMI Output, 4 USB 3.0, Type C Charging Adapter Compatible 2020-2016 MacBook Pro 13/15/16, New Mac Air & Surface, Chromebook, More (CB-C35, Silver) https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07GRSZDJV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_f…

PS - I haven’t personally tried it but this has usbc charging adapter so i am sure this will work.

    • There's power delivery on the one I got, plugs in via USB-C too so not sure how much different this one would be. I'll look into it though!

  • I used this hub successfully and it has ethernet aswell

I also had to buy a power supply that could drive it as the google power supply wasn't powerful enough and it would fail to load

I did it as an experiment more than anything. lol

I was able to play videos of the HDD directly , and as you mentioned I formatted to Fat32

    • Oh nice I'll check that out.

The power supply you linked reminded me of my Switch one, tried plugging that in to power it but still no luck unfortunately.

I'm using this hub though from eBay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/8in-1-USB-C-HUB-Type-C-USB-Multi…
Has ethernet too and whatnot, but nothing works when plugged into the Chromecast aside from the actual power delivery, yet it all works when plugged into my laptop.

I tried another hub and it wouldn't work with the chromecast. So i think its hit and miss. I used same psu as im using now.

This is the video I used to find the hub i ended up buying

    • Sweet, thanks! May have to invest in that hub then. Was hoping for a bit of a cheaper alternative, but may as well just spend a bit more as long as it works.

  • Reviving an old topic - I have one of these, is anyone aware why something like this doesn't work with the Chromecast Google TV other than powerup?
