What Happened to The Harvey Norman Christmas?

So most people seen the news that HN profits have sky-rocketed to record 160% (see link below).

But has anyone wondered what that has meant for us bargain hunters?

I think as Harvey gets richer we actually get less bargains?

For instance has anyone noticed :

  • HN has not had a single Super Saturday sale this Christmas period?

  • No big Black Friday event or 10% off everything Cyber Monday event?

  • Cant remember last time I seen or flicked through a HN sale catalogue?

  • Remember the Amex credits they did every Christmas but alas none this year?

  • And don't they make a big deal about their free Santa photos to get you in the door but this year they seemed to have killed off in-store Santa too?!

Have they made enough money where they don't need to try and entice us with deals any more?

COVID19 and GST on low value imports (the Gerry tax) been so good to HN that they doesn't seem to need Christmas sales this year and thus Gerry can issue quotes like this to the media…

"This is like the greatest boom I've ever seen in my lifetime," the 81-year-old chairman told The Australian Financial Review.

So could it be that as Gerry gets richer, we all get poorer with less competition and less bargains? Especially when this "great boom" is on the back of massive Government stimulus spending & taxpayer debt.

  • If we can't beat them, join them. Time to buy an HN franchise.

    • Generally, you have to prove yourself 1st, and become a Franchisee In Training. Sometimes its also who you know. Then you might get posted to some hillbilly town like Muswellbrook or Tamworth, and if you can't improve the performance, then you will lose the franchise. You generally only get 1 shot.

      • A 160% profit isn’t for everyone. Only those that put in the work may reap the rewards.

Why would they need % off sales then 🤷

Cant remember last time I seen or flicked through a HN sale catalogue?

    This isn't a covid thing…
I can't remember the last time I cared about a Harvey's sale or catalogue
They are very rarely the 'bargain' option for anything.

    • Coles have also dumped their physical catalogues, So HN have probably realised that nobody reads them these days (especially Computers/Electrical), and uses the website instead.

      • IKEA are getting rid of their catalogue. If IKEA can't support a catalogue anymore, I don't see how Harvey Norman could. Gerry Harvey cant' be smarter than the top business people of Sweden.

      • You are wrong. Coles still releases paper catalogues every week at their stores.

They are saving even more money by not having to run an sales event and offer discounts, therefore more profit according to what you are saying,

I see your rhetorical questions… not sure what your question is. I guess I agree with you. 🤷‍♂️

    • Lol at op both negging our comments 🤦‍♂️

He seems salty he didn't get his free photo with Santa

      • I guess we weren’t the echo chamber the OP or sympathizers were looking for…

      • Some stores have a cardboard cutout.

    • Problem is so many stores have sales every day of the week. Look at House, they have closing down sales and renovation sales nearly every day of the year (or so it seems), then they have massive sales, stocktake sales. Their signage seem to follow the JB style.

      • Yes, in-line with “We have thing for sale”…

Who buys gets ripped off by Hardly Normal any more anyway?

Only people who don't know any better.

    • Looking at their share price since April, it seems a lot of people don't know any better.

When demand is through the roof, why would you offer discounts?

  • All part of the Great Reset: https://www.skynews.com.au/details/_6209870815001
Transfer of wealth and power from the middle/low class to the wealthy elite corporate types ;)
Have you noticed less sales and increased prices during the Pandemic in general (which is covered in the first part of the Great Reset documentation)?!?

    • Are you being sarcastic?

  • HN profits have sky-rocketed to record 160% (see link below).

maybe cuz Gerry decided to recruit volunteers to work in his shops…

  • I cannot understand why anyone shops there. He is dearer than all the other comparable shops.

I for one refuse point blank to ever set foot in any of his stores for any reason. I just loathe and detest that man.

As for advertising, then maybe most people here don't live in Melbourne. The Age newspaper - or what puports to be a newspaper since channel 9 took it over - is now printed on the back of HN ads. David Syme would be turning in his grave.

  • If you're looking to Harvey Norman for a bargain, you're doing it wrong.
