Best Software to Diagnose SSD Problems?

My ssd is frankly pretty munted but before I Chuck it out I'd like to make a last ditch effort to get it working properly.

The key problem is that it randomly slows down to a crawl for 5-30 seconds where it is at 100% disk without doing pretty much anything. After a while I hear it spin up and everything starts running smoothly again and the disk "catches up".

I'd greatly appreciate anyone's advice or anyone's software download advice that could accurately diagnose the problem and help find a potential fix.

I think you mean HDD not SSD. SSDs have no disk to "spin up".

    • I can hear it spin and it's an SSD. This could indicate some other part is messing it up? Like I'm not saying it's the ssd spinning but I hear something spin faster, maybe my PC fan.

  • So what is the Drive Capacity and how full is it?

SSD's have NO moving parts, so NO sound. Hear that!!!

    • In a really quiet room I can hear my computer when it's busy doing stuff. Even though it's a Toshiba z20 with no moving parts other than the screen, keyboard and nib mouse

  • SSD problems?

That’s your problem right there!! 🤯

  • Are you copying from a hdd to the sdd when this happens?
Does the ssd have a cache?
    Whats the model?
I ask coz one as other said ssds dont spin and make noise. The cache question is coz if it doesnt it usual that when you copy to it it starts of fast and then goes to a crawl after a bit and then goes fast again…seen that a couple of times, dont know how common it is.

For SSD and all disk type info, try Crystaldiskinfo https://crystalmark.info/en/download/ Freeware, but good to donate if useful.

Great for seeing disk problems easily.

  • Like vicrip said, download CrystalDiskInfo and maybe post a screenshot of the results.

Assuming it is indeed an SSD and not a HDD, the "spin up" noise might just be a fan ramping up due to high CPU utilisation associated with the slowdown.

  • Depending on the brand of SSD, you may be able to download a dashboard tool from the manufacturers website & check the status of the drive to see if there are any health warnings.
