How Much to Have Decent Shelving in Wardrobe and Kids Bedroom

Guys looking for suggestions please -

4 bed room house. Typical basic house & land package. Entry level wardrobes without shelves in all bed rooms ( only one shelve across the width with cloth hanging rod). Wife complaining a lot about organization of cloths without shelves. I thought of doing DIY but not really getting enough time due to regular job. And I'm beginner only on these types of works. Got basic tools only.

How much do you think it will cost to go for professional/cabinet maker for decent shelving in Master bed room( 40 cm deep, 380 cm width) and one kid bedroom( 40 cm deep, 160 width) ? Obviously don't want to spend much with one average income.

Any inputs much appreciate your time.

JONAXEL or BOAXEL Ikea systems if you are handy, has online planner too to help.

    • was going to say this
if you want temporary ones get the ikea ones, but check the depth of the systems (mines was not deep enough to house them :(
pretty sure u need 56cm for some of the ikea ones

      • I would prefer permanent one time fix and wood one. Thanks for your thoughts @Xistn @djones

      • Why are the Ikea ones temporary?

        • Agreed, if the wardrobe door hides it all who cares.

If I was to build a house I'd do my built in wardrobes to IKEA standard size because OP can be sure to be gouged for someone to come in measure, cut to size and install. I don't think you can get any half decent trades person for $600 - $800 per day. Automatically $1600 per room + materials.

      • Agreed, People want all parts of the triangle of Quality / price / speed.

You can get modular storage to DIY install at Bunnings some examples here
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/search/products?page=1&q=Shelvin…
My husband did similar in our built ins and I don’t think it was too hard. Bunnings usually has an option/pricing for install as well if you don’t want to DIY. Have a good think what you want on shelves versus drawers and the layout, probably take your wife to have a look in Bunnings - sounds like she know what she wants.

  • DIY as follows is easy and quick, just need a drill and a 5mm drill bit.
Use a 5mm drill to drill 4 holes for each shelf then use https://www.bunnings.com.au/taskmaster-5mm-pin-white-plastic…
and get some shelving cut to size at bunnings like https://www.bunnings.com.au/custompine-2400-x-445-x-16mm-whi…

One advantage of this is that if the shelf height needs to be moved you drill another 4 holes and move it.
The disadvantage of this is that you need to measure the height above the floor very careful to ensure the selfs are level. Measure twice and drill once, hopefully.
To ensure the drill bit does not go through the side boards wrap some electrical or sticky tape at the depth you want to stop at, which is the depth of the shelf support parts.

  • An Ozbargainer will never have enough space to store stuff, it’s a lost cause 😆

  • Paid $1000 for a custom built-in in a master bedroom as an indication.

  • We've used these guys for 2 houses now http://www.innerspace.com.au/

Been decent, obviously will cost more depending on whether you go for colored etc.

Everything is pretty much MDF as are all the others out there that don't charge astronomical prices.

If you want real wood, speak to a carpenter but it will cost you dearly, I think when we got a quote it was over $5K a room, with our first house it was about $3.5K for 3 bedrooms.

We've now sold the property but it's been over 5 years and there were no issues what so ever, including having my son thinking it would be fun to empty out the drawers and use them for climbing…

  • 40 cm deep, 380 cm width

Step one: talk in mm or m. cm is for dressmaking.
