  • "Inbuilt GPS records speed". Pass

    • Why is that a pass ? Don’t know much about dash cams

The risk insurance company might void your policy after an accident as you were 5km over the speed limit

        • Could you probably turn off the Speed counter from displaying on recording?

        • This is a great point. I'm considering though that it could show an estimated speed, not actual, as I'd say 99% of off the shelf devices haven't been calibrated for Australia. Considering the actual accuracy in most cases is within 5-10m (2-3m accuracy at best for a stationary receiver), there's a massive compunding margin for error. The insurance company would have a hard time denying the claim based off GPS data only, especially if only doing a few km over. Similarly you'd have a hard time proving you were doing the speed limit based on the same accuracy, but burden of proof is on the company.

I'm genuinely curious about this being tested in court, and would love to see if anyone has articles on it.

@bUrd: It's just another reason they might look a little harder. One of my mates work for Suncorp in the higher claims around (over $150,000) and he told me they notice the speed was around 20km higher than what was posted. They took the data and calculated the distance covered vs time (even pulled data from the radio station that was playing (time factor to prove camera was real-time) and compared it. That little hint cause Suncorp to find the driver was speeding (i.e. committing a crime) at the time and voided the payment. I only know the story because my mate got a massive bonus in his paycheck for it. Don't think they bother will low end claims, but it was enough for me to know I never want a camera with speed or voice recording or a "Blackbox" fitted (GIO have ditched the plan, but it's massive in the UK now). All I know is insurance companies are scum

            • @Froot Loops: I can see them definitely doing these sorts of checks for big claims, and where there's a clear excessive speed involved. I'd agree that they wouldn't bother with the low claims or the ones that might be 5km over the limit as it can't be proved within a reasonable amount. Sounds like your mate has a job like CSI for insurance :)

          • @bUrd: I think GPS speed is generally more accurate. Positionally it has error, but generally the error between two immediate readings is constant - resulting in the same measured speed.

  • Is it easy to set up Park Mode?

  • Can anyone that has this unit recommend this product? How does it compare to blackvue or viofo? Will this come with hard wiring kit?

  • Warning for anyone thinking of getting this. It is identical to this Kapture dash cam from JB Hi-Fi read the reviews.

The speed camera alerts are incredibly annoying and there is no way to turn them off permanently. They go off at every school zone even when its not a speed camera. They go off when you're on a highway and theres an underpass below you with a red light camera. The only way to stop it is through the app every time you start your car is to toggle the setting and yes you have to do it every time you start your car…

well that just about kills it for me

    • This is not correct. I've been using the kpt-890 for nearly a year now (got it as a secret santa give last xmas for my daily driver) and I have the speed camera alerts permanently turned off.

      • How do you turn them permanently off?

Going by the poor reviews on JB Hi-Fis page I'm not the only one with this problem…

        • Updated the firmware and selected speed alerts off in the app.

          • @1jwoz: Thanks I'll have to look into it

@1jwoz: thanks for that info, finally can drive in peace after updating the firmware

            • @brandogs: No probs! It's been pretty reliable for me over the past year, hopefully it keeps ticking along.

              • @1jwoz: The small weight to it with the adhesive bond is also a bonus as it will never fall off unless you pull it off. My last one was a navman with a built in screen and it was bulky with a suction cup to stick to the window, it always fell off from the heat, never again with stupid suction cups

  • What’s the quality of the recordings like?
How does it do 24hr park mode - wouldn’t that run your battery flat?

    • Depends on if you have wifi enabled on the unit the entire time as that does take a little more power. However, you should be able to have the car sitting with park mode for at least 24 hours, likely 48 hours if your battery is good. This depends on the size and age of the battery as well as the ambient temperature. The camera should have the shut off feature that detects power levels and turns itself off before draining the car battery.
