Lithium battery, knurled aluminium tube, a switch and an LED = hundreds of dollars now?

Thats a bit of an ignorant comment.

A quality sub $50-60 torch is typically low output, non rechargeable, less durable or less specialised, doesn't come with batteries included or a combination of these things. A quality torch over price range is typically high powered, is rechargeable, has a better fit and finish, has better thermal management, better support, a degree of customisabilty, better IPX ratings etc.

Take for instance the $69, generic "600 lumen spotlight" that was originally listed as 1000 lumens when I bought it but it is that dim it had to be corrected. Despite minimal use, the handle is falling off, the threads were gritty from the get-go and the output is pitiful with only roughly 100m range when focused and arguably less that 600 lumens output similar.

Compare that to my reputable, branded Olight S1 Baton, a 600 lumen 110m throw torch for $65, also from 2016, which is twice as bright despite having the same output (allegedly) and had more throw despite being a floodier beam than the spot, is still in excellent condition

You really do get what you pay for when it comes to torches and a quality one will outperform a cheapy anyday

        Fair enough…
When do you use these spotlight replacement torches? Do you mount them to a rifle for Bunny Hunting? Seems like to only real world scenario that you might need this much portable illumination.
I have an 8 year old Cheapo "high power" LED head torch that I use when clambering around in the roof cavity, but that's far too bright on full power so I have to run it in flickery half power mode.

        • I personally have shockingly poor low light vision, I also live semi-rural, so plenty of wildlife to spot at night time. I don't really have a use case for a 1km thrower other than messing around with torches and lighting things up. As for close-range illumination, a floodlight will have high lumens and low candela (luminous intensity) so a torch that can light up a large area well and can maintain that output is ideal when I'm walking around the yard or working on something or just want to light up an area for several people.

My LED Lenser headlamp died pretty quick, the angle adjustable mechanism wore down and it flopped around constantly. Also very dim at 400 lumens and adjustable beam. My Perun Mini, on the other hand, is super floody, adjustable angle via rolling it in the strap, usable as a magnetic hands-free torch, and brighter than most it's size. The only downside I've found is that high powered torches get warm, regardless of brand

Certainly a cheapy has its uses, but they don't hit the same mark as a genuinely high performance torch.

Grab an (S2R Baton II](https://www.olightstore.com.au/olight-s2r-baton-ii-1150-lume…) if you want to try one out. Currently $75.96 + free shipping. Arguably one of their more popular models for EDC and general use with a max output of 1150 and 135m in short bursts (turbo) and 400 lumens and 80m throw on high

@Wilkshire13: I have a phone and the aforementioned ageing ~$25 Head Torch.
And the phone is by far used as a torch the most frequently.
Haven't met a situation where I need anything else, hence my amazement that torches are commanding these prices!

            • @ESEMCE: I was the same, now the phone doesn't cut it sadly. If you ever replace the headlamp, take a shot on something a little more upmarket :)
