LG or Panasonic Microwave

Anyone own or had this microwave and has it been sold for less?

I have been looking at this and then looking at several panasonic models but regardless what you look at there is no perfect model, when you look at reviews on one site then next or read people's feedback ot just puts you off.

People having got several replacements be in panasonic or lg as they failed before 12 months or just after.
Its like the models these days are just thrown together but yet still as premium prices for.

Im going around in circles trying to pick one.

I am in need of one as ours packed in, im trying hold on to boxing day but might be hard or possible no good deals.
The one listed above can get for about $268 with further 5% off or i could possible get a store to price match and source further discount and get for less.

My last micro was a panasonic and it lasted 8 yrs if i remember was not expensive at time or nothing to fancy.
When they say some of these are countertop are the best suited for that? We have a large area for a micro and would fit a 42l no problem, but do we really need 42ltr.

Just curious what you guys purchased and why im hoping most are getting more than a few years from a micro these days more so when most of years ago last much longer.

  • Price, size & a few cosmetic choices are all it is. Microwaves generally last a long time. Defrosting & Reheating is pretty much it. Go for what fits your budget.

We purchased a Panasonic around 6 years ago & it's still going. Gave our microwave to a family member & purchased the same model for our new house.

    • What was your panasonic you had and got again?

  • I like microwaves that have a quiet setting where they don't beep, and also where I can turn off the silly clock that uses 7w of power 24/7.

so any microwave with those features gets my vote.

  • If you believed everything in online reviews you'd never buy anything anymore - as useful as Ebay feedback..
Went through this with washing machine and dryer recently.

Online reviews most people only ever complain, they rarely CBF to give good reviews.

You had Panasonic for 8yrs, I dont think anything electronic is made to last anything like that anymore

    YMMV

  • +1

Any model of any electrical item will have the occasional lemon. That's life. You roll the dice and hope for the best.

Choice's most recent Microwave review had 3 x LG models in the top 4 - including the one you linked. I recently bought a 25 litre version of the same thing. No complaints so far. But then, we only use it to defrost and reheat.

When looking, my only requirement was that the door wasn't opened by pushing a button, as this is what failed on our last microwave - after reheating my dinner - leaving it trapped inside, and me hungry.

    • We would only use it for reheat possibly most and odd micro meal to cook
So what lg model did you get and how long you had it, i never used to read reviews before buying items but i am more now and it sure makes picking harder.
I have had about 4 or 5 different models of different makes and as soon as i see issues it puts me clean off, even though many are positive.
I know what your saying there will always be a lemon and i could be the next one to get one no matter what model to get.
But i suppose its good to at least not buy a crap machine to start with.
I earlier this year had to get a new washing machine my Samsung lasted just over 7 yrs when i read on reviews on it people only had it last 3 yrs. So i maybe got lucky.

I was tempted to get same brand but ended up getting a much more expensive model and too extra insurance just incase so hopefully its a good buy, but least i be good with warranty for 5 yrs. Im not normally the person to buy extra warranty but the washing machine was too expensive not to.

So what was not opening your current lg door?

      • I got a smaller version of the one you linked. Have only had it for about 3 weeks. Previous was a Panasonic. The large button that was pushed to open the door failed.

        • My panasonic has started to smoke so have never tried to turn on again.
I like the one in my post as it has that silver ss on front which i dont think the smaller ones have.
The place to keep the microwave will be big enough but we will not always be in the same house.
And i found that the smaller ones aint much cheaper pending how or where you buy and if using discount etc.

      • i recently bought the Kmart 34L microwave and it's really good. previously had a Breville Fast and Easy that was supposedly the same power but the Kmart felt way stronger. My cooking time less than halved. it's only $99 scores highly on choice as well.
for a smaller one, their 20L one is $48 and scores even higher.

    • Im also not able to access Choice as its a paid service this should be free to all to be honest.
But i believe lg is highly recommend for microwaves but to be honest they seem to always be well down the list in the appliances.
I don't get why Choice vote panasonic as number 1 and lg like 4 or 5. But yet say lg is good choice in microwaves.

      • The LG Microwave Oven you linked is one of their three number one choices, from their July 2020 assessment as commented earlier.

Where did you read Panasonic voted number one?

        • Sorry its.

          https://www.canstarblue.com.au/appliances/microwaves/

Not choice that list is on best to worst.

So the one i linked on my post your saying is from choices of three number ones, what are other two?
Aint this i linked in my post not one that's been out few years ago.
And would that assessment not be older?

  • We got a Panasonic / Matushita convection microwave in 1997. It stopped working in 2006. Panasonic replaced it for us after I wrote a nice letter setting out all the other Panasonic stuff we owned - completely unexpected but we were pretty happy. The replacement was still going at my parents' place when I was there in November (albeit it's only been used rarely since 2016).

Couldn't fit another Panasonic in the shelf space after a kitchen remodel in 2016 so went Electrolux, it seems fine as well, although the display on the matching oven below it was buggered by steam escaping from the oven within a couple of years of purchase.

  • So what have you all been buying and how long owned please when your replying just curious what all you guys been getting.
It does make choice easier when there is a model on a deal or sale ie lowest price ever etc.

  • No offence intended, but it seems you are agonising over a relatively small appliance purchase. There is no guarantee either the LG or Panasonic will survive beyond a certain timeframe. However, I'll share my personal perspective on this (based on working in an electronics retailer many moons ago).

LG seem to do an excellent job of microwaves. Panasonic were leaders in this area many, many years ago, but LG were focussed on this market and had a 2+3 year warranty (2 year parts/labour, additional 3 year warranty on magnetron). It seems LG still do the 2 year warranty, while Panasonic is 1 year - this is enough to make me choose an LG alone. LG do have good parts replacement in Australia too, I had a customer once tell me she broke the turntable (it stuck to her container and when she removed it from the microwave, it fell and broke). I contacted LG and they express posted out a new one to her. This may have been a mistake, a once-off, or some unwritten policy, but I thought it was a good gesture.

My parents have had 2 LG microwaves in 20 years. The most recent one is about 13 years old, one button has stopped working - the one we hit the most (3) but you can always work around that with 29 seconds or other combinations. A lot of Panasonic microwaves don't have a number pad, just increments of 1s, 10s or 1m. The LG has lasted longer than I would have expected, and aesthetically it looks as good as the new sleek units out there which is great.

The other thing I particularly liked about LG was they have a rounded cavity which means grease didn't get trapped in hard to reach corners. You can wipe all the way around with most LG units (depending on the model). I also didn't find the Panasonic were particularly neat looking (LG and Samsung seem to be better here).

If I were buying one, I'd be looking at LG or Samsung. I've used Samsung consumer microwaves in busy office environments and they seemed to be fine for the abuse they suffered.

    • Ok thats some good points and its been mentioned lg ones are highly regarded on here.
I know somethings last and other stuff don't but what makes repeat purchases or to a brand is having a good experience with one.
Like my last washing machine i got 7 yrs from it where some only got 3 yrs.
And was half the price of my new washing machine which i decided to get something different.
I know what you mean its a small cost appliance but you can buy a $50 kmart to a $400 plus branded on and still maybe get a kmart one outlast branded.

You kind of got going towards an lg now, yes you said you have got years from yours, but im not so sure these big brands are putting the money into things these days and dont last. Its probably good on there part as they hope you come back and buy another but not if its short lived.

I think a cool lg deal would draw me in but nothing to great right now or what i have seen for much less i seen before.

Im also curious is lg provide dates of when these models came out as i find a number of them are going back 3 yrs.

And its do i really need a 42 ltr vs say a 21 ltr as depending what your after and shop around there are ones that can be had a 42ltr for similar price as 21ltr.

      • Sounds like whatever you do, you will be making an informed purchase 🙂 My opinion on the capacity - I have a 34lt unit, but I would have preferred a smaller one as I find it takes up a lot of bench space in my relatively small kitchen.

I also did buy a refurbished Sharp microwave (this one to be exact) years ago, and although the LCD display is cactus, the microwave is still going strong - for $49.97 delivered 7 years ago. I kind of wish it wasn't, so I could replace it with a smaller unit, but it's too wasteful to do so.

  • Go Panasonic…
I have the LG and miss being able to set an exact time.
    Love the large size though.

    • Interesting, I thought it was the opposite - some Panasonic models only had increments of time and the LG had a num-pad. Maybe this has switched around or it varies per model.

      • The 42 that i have has 30 sec increments or the finger slide at 10 sec increments on the glass door panel

  • +1

The cool down cycle on my Panasonic microwave bloody annoys me. Obviously, I have no patience.

  • Well im going for the MS4296OSS and there is a part under the kitchen top cut out for it but this thing is heavy just over 11kg.
im worried tne space for microwave will not support that weight.
There is about 30mm or just over at each side and plenty from top of microwave to top of area.
And about 40 or 50 mm back and front. It does say this is a kitchen top microwave but we have a large ares cut out a micro to be placed in.
But our old one is tiny and old and needs replaced now.
