Xbox Sparked and Wont Start / Any Alternatives?

Hey guys,

My 2 year old Xbox sparked with some burning smell and wont turn on anymore. i am not sure if the recent thunder was the cause of it, but it was well used by the family for Netflix, YouTube as well as gaming. The warranty was valid for only a year so I am sure that is out of the question.

Any suggestions on fixing, or any alternatives on replacing the device that will make the family happy.

Which Xbox? My One S came with 3 years warranty.

Edit: My Series X also has 3 years warranty.

    • My bad! I have an Xbox One S too and yes the warranty expired January 2020

Look up if your console is still in warranty first. You will need a serial number, found on the back of the Xbox.

My Xbox 1S bought from February 2018 had it's warranty expire in January 2020.

Convenient timing, let me guess you have an Xbox S or X on the Christmas wish list and the family or S.O said not until your current one dies.

Microsoft has graciously repaired an out-of-warranty Xbox for me before. It's true there was a warranty extension for a particular issue with my model - but my Xbox just broke (for something that, in all honesty, was not Microsoft's fault at all). So yeah, it pays to give support a call.

    • Wow you got lucky! I gave them a call, they asked if i've suffered any injuries from the burn and proceeded to say they cant do anything as warranty has expired :(

I had a Xbox one s a while back and it was over 2 years old, the controller then started having issues and I called Microsoft and they said they needed the receipt and I said I didn’t have it and only got it about a year ago, they said no worries I will activate the warranty for you now and they just started the 2 year warranty as new again. They then replaced the controller. So just ring them up and say you got it about a year ago and just tell them you don’t have a receipt and they probably will fix it for you at no charge

    • Did yours fall within warranty period? They just checked warranty for mine and said im on my own for repairs

      • Nah mine was out of warranty
Just tell them you only got it a year ago

Have you considered a Chromecast as an alternative? If it is mainly used for netflix then a chromecast is a great alternative and then you can wait until next gen consoles are a good option.

Edit: Also sounds like death by gecko to me, hopefully just needs a cleanout and a new fuse but you'll need to get someone who can work with 240V to do it for you so best to go warranty if you can.

    • Since warranty has ended just the start of the year I've had a quote of $120 to fix the console. Lovely timing lol. I believe my dad has bought something similar to Chromecast but from xiaomi. But undecided on what to do with the xbox at the moment.

And yeah i have seen geckos wandering around the TV area which could be a high possibility. I wonder what they'd do to it

      • The gecko gets inside the case because they are sneaky little buggers and then get's the electric chair as punishment. The fuse gets blown as part of the process.
