What Is Your Backup Preference for Web Hosting and VPS Hosting?

Hi,

I'm asking as many people as possible to get an idea of a customer's ideal backup pattern. The options are below:

Daily backups with 14-day history
OR
12 hourly backups with 7-day history

What would you prefer? More frequent backups (12 hourly but only 7 days back) or backups that go further back with 24 hourly instead of 12?

Just curious about everyone's thoughts.

  • What are we backing up again?

    • Web Hosting and VPS Hosting.

      • How many websites/apps per server. And is it a member site, do people log in and do stuff, or do they just look at stuff.

        • -1

Each node is different I'm more looking for a personal preference as a customer. If you'd rather more frequent backups but only 7 days or less frequent but with a longer history.

          • @nathansaccount: If I don't control when backups, then I'd expect hourly. If your customers are logging into their own WP dashboards you could let them make their own backups. If you're not using wordpress or a CRM that has one click backups, I mean you haven't told us how these websites are made. Are they static websites?

            • @AustriaBargain: It's all cPanel shared hosting. Customers are able to create their own backups and use them. The automatic backups that we do as a hosting provider is the automated ones.

Customers are able to control their backups and create a backup/download when they like, usually of their entire cPanel account but this is on top of the automatic backups we take.

Some customers have static sites, some use Wordpress, Magento etc. We use cPanel/WHM's built-in backup system but our main backup software is jetBackup.

              • @nathansaccount: So these backups are in case you do something wrong and the server poops itself, at no fault of your clients? I'd be pretty pissed if I lost 7 days of work on my little website because my host explained a bunch of stuff I don't understand.

How often does the data being backed up change?

At work general data that changes regularly go with incremental Mon-Sat, Sunday full backup
    also full monthly and yearly

    • At the moment incremental backups are taken daily with 14-day history with the data being in the same DC on a backup server and a full compressed backup is also taken and stored off-site in Los Angeles. So there are 2 backups of each account/service with the incremental one being local so you are able to restore select files rather quickly but a full 1 file backup in Los Angeles.

  • Probably best to base this on what kind of backup granularity you need, rather than a survey of Ozbargainers…

How current do you need your data in case of restore?

  • For my customers it's hourly with a month's worth of data retained. Snapshots can be kept for longer by request.

  • I know this is not an answer to your question, but we implement Grandfather-father-son backup. We retain 12 monthly backups, 4 weekly backups and 7 daily backups.
