Bad Driving Caught on Xiaomi 70mai Dashcam

Every now and then I'll see some super low prices for the Xiaomi 70mai dashcam.

If you are thinking about buying them, they're superb units for the price you pay which is anywhere from $35 to just under $70 from memory (happy to be corrected.)

YouTube link so you can judge the video quality for yourself. Mute the video if you are not a fan of swear words.

If anyone knows of a Suzuki running around with [1SD-2AT] plates, please feel free to forward this video to the driver so that she may reflect on her lack of self awareness and how that may negatively impact her and other drivers around her on future trips.

Pretty good quality for the money.

  • +2

What's up with the poor/jumpy audio? Is that caused by the dashcam or something else?

    • Terrible audio

    • -3

My music is on full blast so no doubt that's the issue there.

      • +1

RIP your hearing… you'll regret it

        • Your ears are soft, mine will never go deaf

  • +59

To be fair you were hovering in her blind spot a bit.

No excuse for the Suzukis bad driving (clearly didn't head check) but I would have stayed another car length back if I was in your position.

That area of Melbourne is a nightmare for non regular users and when I'm there I assume all drivers are there for the first time.

      • +16

I do when I'm in that part of town. I see you're in Sydney. Have you driven this stretch of road?

Drivers are so focused on which lane they need to be in they forget the basics. It is a shit fight 24/7 in that area.

The wrong exit can literally add 20 minutes and a toll road to your journey.

      • +34

When I'm on the road I assume everyone else is either a new driver or doesn't know where they are going. When I suspect certain drivers in front of me I either overtake them asap or stay as far away as possible.

Trust me, staying a couple of car lengths behind these cars save a lot of time and hassle because most of these idiots wouldn't have any clue even if they hit you head-on.

      • +34

Sometimes it pays to be a defensive driver.

        • +3

Always pays! It's not worth the hassle and trouble for a bit of ego/seconds off your trip

      • +12

it's called firetrucking self-preservation. where'd you find your licence? in a packet of eneloops?

        • +1

Nah, in a high yield investment car. With Pam’s help in trying to get a refund for some absurd reason :)

Edit, I’m actually on OP side, but the comment above was a cracker, I couldn’t help myself to contribute.

      • +3

Anyone who’s ever ridden a motorcycle or a driver who understands defensive driving. You avoid hovering in blind spot.

      • Anyone who has a brain would.

    • +13

The OP was not hovering. He/She's faster than the Suzuki and about to overtake it.
If he Suzuki was paying attention, they should be aware there's a car joining the lane from the left.
It's a matter of people not paying attention and not checking blind spot properly.

      • -2

The OP was not hovering. He/She's faster than the Suzuki and about to overtake it.

        Think you mean UNDERtake…

      • +1

Yep, but the driver could have backed off when she started to change lanes without looking. 90% her fault, but there were a few seconds were she started indicating and turning where the driver could have backed off. Instead he decided to keep accelerating into a spot where the driver hadn't seen him.

    • The full on sun doesn't help anyone either.
It's a pity we don't see the speed in the video.

      • +6

You have only just entered that lane though. She may have checked it earlier and thought it would still be clear.

It was poor driving of course, but not completely unexpected.

        • +5

The only thing that was unexpected was when I drove past and she had her phone in her hand.

That really sent the swear bears into overdrive.

That area of Melbourne is a nightmare for non regular users

Wonder if the person who decided on hotel quarantine with private security (unnamed) is the same person that put that stretch of road together. Confusing non regular drivers is when accidents happen because they are distracted about where to go and there is heavy traffic all around.

    • +15

Yep a pretty dumb move from the bad driving handbook. Don’t sit in peoples blind spots and never assume they have seen you.

This is defensive driving 101. With a bit more age and maturity you will eventually figure out the road is not your personal racetrack.

Your ridiculous swearing and carry on shows exactly the type of bogan you are.

      • +2

        thats harsh!

        • +3

          But true.

        • +21

Defensive driving isn't about being right. It's about being safe.

@aragornelessar: You just saw a girl choose to still take a lane in a dangerous situation even after hearing a horn sounding off. That's called driving with an ego.

Unfortunately the Insurance company/cops only see right or wrong. My advice to you is read up on how to change a lane from the vicroads website.

Either that or he remembers that sometimes creating a bit of space between a car that looks out of sorts is a heap more convenient in the long run.

      • Your ridiculous swearing and carry on shows exactly the type of bogan you are.

Now, now, not everyone can have an eloquent grasp of the English language like yourself.

    • +8

When I saw the video at the beginning, as a defensive driver, I saw 2 warning signs immediately:-

      a. The sun is shining directly in your face. You may be able to see the traffic but other drivers may not. They could be suddenly blinded if they travelled out of a shaded area.

      b. The car on the right has a very noticeable length of space in front of it and the space was getting bigger. This indicates to me that the driver is either slowing down due to the sunlight or wants to change lane and I would slow down a bit more in the chance the driver decides to as I am clearly in the car's blind spot.

One thing I learn from my years of driving in Sydney. There are always people who are oblivious to the road surroundings. It pays to always drive defensively. Even though the other vehicle may be in the wrong, I would rather just try my best to avoid the accident even if I have the right of way. The idea of being inconvenienced with the car in the workshop getting repairs (even if it's not my fault) is just not worth it.

      • +2

Yeah it's a pretty easy situation to predict watching the start of the video, however this type of thing is generally learnt from experience and often learning the hard way. It would seem the OP still has lots of growing up to do.

  • +1

The driver is either stoned or drunk.

    • +3

      Or both.

  • I thought the quality of my 70mai was pretty average… https://streamable.com/iaxg4

Looks good to me for the price. Somewhat keen to try a 4k dashcam but the prices are unreasonable. Happy with this for sure.

      • +1

The picture is certainly good enough to show what happened but I struggle to read number plates in this video.

I think you would get a better picture on a cloudy day but for Australia I'd consider a different one.

Driver with the camera should have given way to car on right.

Driver with the camera should have given way to car on right.

Give way to cars changing lanes from the right?….

A bit too early for shrooms isn't it?

      • +1

Give way to cars changing lanes from the right?….

        Yes, their indicator was on…

        • +11

Indicator means exactly what the word says "indicating", it doesn't give you the right to barge in, nor does it mean everyone else has to give way to you.

          • -2

            @Ughhh:

Indicator means exactly what the word says "indicating"

So the driver on the left must give way to cars that are in front of you and merging to the left.

            Learn your road rules…

            • +5

              @jv: Learn to google specsavers.

There's no 'merging lanes' between the camera driver and the black car. Just black car changing lanes. Black car gives way to traffic heshe wants to change to.

              • +5

@Ughhh: I don't see why you are making unnecessary comments about the car's colour…

                • +1

              • +5

                @Ughhh: You are spot on!

"When you change lanes you must give way to vehicles already in that line off traffic."

Straight from vicroads if anyone wants a source.

      • Thanks for your support hun…

    • +1

Hi hun, unsure if you are playing dumb or need an update on the road rules but I have broken it down in a simple format for you to understand.

      1.) Monitor traffic
      2.) Indicate safely
      3.) Check mirrors
      4.) Do a headcheck
      5.) Change lanes smoothly

When you change lanes you must give way to vehicles already in that line off traffic.

The purpose of the headcheck is to check that it's all clear and safe to change lanes. Seeing that the camera car was at the halfway point of hers, this should have indicated that no it was not safe.

Camera car was not speeding, he was quite content to cruise along at the speed indicated on the signage.

Also, when the camera car said "Keep your effing eyes on the road" it was because the lady in the suzuki had her phone in her right arm and then took her left arm off the steering wheel to apologise for being a banana. In the space of ten second she nearly wiped out the camera car and then decided it was okay to drive without both hands firmly on the steering wheel, while being distracted by her important instagram updates.

If you need any more help, I am always here for you hun.

      • +3

        I would suggest

        1. Mirrors
        2. Indicate
        3. Head check
        4. Change if safe
        • Not that I disagree with you but that is straight from vicroads website.

  • +26

Seemed unnecessarily aggressive to return the favour by overtaking the Suzuki after that.
A mistake was made, you saw her and made a defensive manoeuvre to avoid her, so all is well. Drop back a little, forgive and move on. No need to cuss her out and reclaim your position.

    • -3

Was not to reclaim position, was to get away from her unsafe driving. She'll kill someone one day if she keeps that up.

      • +10

If I were concerned about someones dangerous driving, I'll stay behind at a distance where I am not near, but can also keep an eye out.

Overtaking and getting back into the same lane just increases the risk that her dangerous driving could end up in her rear-ending you.

        • Fair enough, I was just concerned that her erratic driving style would result in her trying to brake check me if I stayed behind her.

          • +5

@[Deactivated]: Surprised you didn't brake check her with that aggressive attitude 😁

            • +5

@Muzeeb: No need for that, nobody wins in the scenario of a brake check.

    • +4

Agreed. Suzuki made a mistake and accidentally merged onto DC. DC overacted and intentionally cut off the Suzuki.

      Shame DC didn't get a 2channel dashcam,

    • +8

The maturity level is certainly lacking in your response. This type of things will happen many times in your driving career. Carrying on like a pork chop after the fact reflects very poorly on your self. People do make errors. If it happens pull back and give them some room and time to compose themselves.

For you in particular practice some deep breathing instead of loosing your temper when these things happen. I hope this type of behaviour doesn’t spill out into other areas of your life.

    • I don't think he returned the favour, she went in front of him at a lower speed he was travelling at so he overtook on the right lane at his assumed speed

  • +30

The driver appears to have some anger issues himself

    • +5

      Yup, got overreaction much?

      • -1

He also cut-off the driver behind the Suzuki.

I saw the footage from a dashcam posted on another forum site…
