      Tl;dr version, the American lobster are classified as true lobster, while the Aussie one are spiny lobster (or seawater crayfish). They are very different in terms of taxonomy hierarchy.

          I did a PhD with these lads, not specifically this but I can make an "educated guess"

          Nothing happen with the claws ;). Just evolutionary process I presume, as they evolve from 2 different ancestors, true lobsters are Nephropoidea, while spiny lobsters are Achelata. The former use claws as defensive mechanism, while the latter doesn't use claws (or even not having claws at the beginning so it just vanish (Achelata literally means "no-claws"). They just coincidentally evolve to have similar outside appearance, a process called "convergent evolution". Hence in lay-man terms they are both called lobster :).

        Is this why the chinese banned the import of Australian 'lobster'. Australia passed off our seawater crayfish as lobster - its counterfeit lobster.

      Since people are taking the piss, I'll give you the real reason it's on there.

      Fisheries are concerned about the potential for importing seafood with diseases such as white spot. If people use infected crustaceans for bait, we would then infect Australian crustaceans, resulting in high death rates to the population.

      White spot disease is a highly contagious viral infection that affects crustaceans such as prawns, yabbies and crabs. When found in high intensity production areas, such as prawn farms, white spot disease results in the rapid mortality of prawns.

    Wa crayfish can be had for $17 in perth atm FYI.
    Also supporting local i feel outweighs the savings.

    Fwiw wa crayfish also taste better imho, there's a reason the Chinese take them.

    Also the tails by themselves can be had for $7.50 which is a far cheaper way of buying the meat

    Can you actually get the Aussie crayfish that were meant to be in abundant supply now that China banned them?
    Cant see it in supermarkets / Costco etc, all imported stuff.

    Not sure if I want to support the crayfish industry, they exported all their catch and only reluctantly sell it to us when they hit a brick wall overseas. Yet they make it like they are doing us a big favour. Only in Australia I see fishing towns and harbours that have very limited selection of seafood because most are exported (mostly good stuff are overseas). Not to mention they are not cheaper than shops in the middle of Sydney.

        we ned to stop playing tit for tat. Yes i know that they neglected us for a very long time but if we escape our narrow mind, this is the perfect opportunity to change the industry. Once they see the amount of sales they get and what they've missed out on they wont revert back to not selling it to us. So yes, you should support locals both for the economic benefits and as a way to push the industry to supply Australia.

        • If the price difference is still large, then doesn't matter how much we buy up, they are still not going to sell much locally when the Chinese market returns.

    • It's all through WA, i'm assuming the transport costs to over east would greatly impact the prices.

  • It's says save $3. So you can buy these all year round for $20 each?

  • I tried these the other week, taste pretty bad. You're better off buying the raw tails for $7.50 and cook it yourself
