Catching Blue Crab in Perth Metro with Kids Using Drop Net and Scoop Only (No Boat), Any Good Place to Suggest?

Its been a long time since I went crabbing, and when I do I normally go to Mandurah with scoop. However this year its a little different so I have to catch Uber, just wondering if there is any safe areas with young kids to go in the Perth Metro area to catch some crabs?

I have 2 drop nets, 2 scoops, planning to go with 2 young kids (7 and 4) and my partner

I have heard there are places in the Swan River, however I have no idea where to go, with drop net I would thought some jetty maybe?

If I want to use the scoop, where do i go in the Perth Metro area where the water is not deep, kids can enjoy using the scoop for the first time and also maybe have a catch at the end of the day also?

Planning to go later today.

Thanks very much

Could run into trouble using kids for bait.

Please don't drive too far with a 4yo not in a car seat.

I've caught blue crabs before. What we used was a small commercial fishing boat with a four man crew and a drunk captain. It involves a lot of standing around smoking cigarettes and scratching your arse after you pull up empty pods. Sometimes though, the pods aren't empty and then you and your kids (assuming you make up a four man crew) put on huge thick gloves and start sorting them. Wash them and then cook them on your commercial steamer also installed on the boat and can them before you get back to shore. Then give them to the local distributor, go to a nearby store, pick up and buy your can of your blue crab for you and your family to enjoy.

  • I remember reading about this last year and looks like people are being warned re toxic algae in crabs again this year

Here’s the map of where not to go from early this year (not sure if this changes each season)

I think Canning bridge is popular and outside the red zone in the map if not too far away (could you get the train instead?).

Good luck! It sounds like hard work with two kids and no car.
