Any advice on buying a decent Telescope under 2K?
Celestron range goes up pretty fast, I am mainly looking for feedback if you have one that costs ~2K$

  • What specifications are you looking at? I think you have given us an open question and people can interpret it in which ever way.

Celestron NexStar series is good if you can get 8SE version. But it’s damn expensive in Aus and fairly priced ok in states.

I have the Celestron 5SE, this is good plus the 6 and 8 (get the biggest aperature you can afford (leaving $ for required accessories) but 5SE minimum. Great for planets and moon). Don’t buy the 4SE! It has a flick mirror that is prone to problems rather than a visual back. The 5SE is $1699rrp i believe in Aus. I found it on Amazon Australia for $1060 posted with prime (they go in and out of stock so put it on a watch list and be patient). One big BUT…. no aus warranty unless you buy from a local celestron certified dealer. For the $600 saving i took the chance and it has been great. Also they only come with one eyepiece so budget for a celestron 8-24mm zoom. These aren’t amazing long term but they are GOLD when starting out as no changing eyepieces etc and you get multiple magnifications in one. Optional extras you might want later: a power source as they run on AA batteries which is rubbish. Talentcell 72w about $80-$90 is good. Also the wifi dongle so you can use with the app but that last one is a luxury, the hand set works fine. Lst thing, join the various celestron facebook groups and you can learn heaps :)
Ps covid has hit supplies hard and a lot of astronomy gear is hard to get at present :(

  • Too late. The next sub-degree great conjunction is in 2080.

What are you aiming to do?
Looking at Messier objects suggests a 16in Dobsonian would be best, but astrophotography will want an equatorial Mount.
If this doesn’t make a lot of sense to you, buy cheap dob and explore a bit before committing thousands.
