Does Anyone Else Live Somewhere Where Fuel Is Always Expensive?

In Melton Victoria fuel always seems to be about $1.45/litre, while in surrounding towns and suburbs it tends to be around $1.15/litre or less, sometimes going up for the weekend or briefly for another reason. I believe it's because it's a tiny bit isolated. Not much, just you don't go through Melton to get anywhere, the ones on the freeway are priced more normally.

It's a pretty low socioeconomic area, which I think makes it even worse that they do it. There are around 5 servos, it's clearly deliberate. It's fine for me, I lock in the 7/11 price without any kind of "cheating" the system and "save" about $10/tank, I just think they're a-holes for doing it, I recommend against filling up in Melton, or at least using the fuel lock.

A new 7/11 opened recently and very briefly the price was equal to the cheapest price I could lock in, but it's now also matching the rest in Melton.

TL; DR All of the servos rip people off for fuel in my suburb, it's always more expensive than the nearby towns/suburbs. I think they're a-holes.

Has anyone else noticed this in their area and recommend against filling up there?

Maybe people are stealing fuel?? 🤷‍♂️ As in, fill up don’t pay and leave. ( not trying to be disrespectful to OP).

Maybe they're stealing it because its so expensive.

        Does create a Circular problem.

    • The rest of the areas around me aren't really better off. They also don't do the pay before you fill up even at night. Also weird opening a second 7/11 if it's a known issue. I wouldn't rule it out completely though.

    Canberra, the entire city.

  • A new 7/11 opened recently

HQ would have done their homework and may have concluded that this area has high ownership of older, big engine and fuel-guzzling vehicles. Building a petrol station in this location and charging a premium would then be a financially justifiable investment. The already establish stations would also do the same to maximise their gains.

  • I live in outer sth eastern subs, also a low socio-economic area. Fuel at our APCO service station has been 99.99c for maybe 6 months (over the pandemic lockdown). It's only just gone up to 119.99 (in the week before Christmas). The BP across the road was often at 145.9 but the APCO always held its own at 99.99.

  • The Hills in Sydney, fairly pricey area, fairly pricey fuel.

  • I live in Sydney's North Shore where prices are high and last to drop and never drop near the lows, … until recently when I got a 7-11 local lock at the lowest from a bit south (also a bit west similar) - I never thought it would ever happen.

A bit west of us it's cheaper and a bit more west it's even cheaper as there are a couple of servos near each other. Need to be strategic here - e.g. tag onto shopping or park for kids to play, meet other families.

  • where I am the cheaper areas have cheaper fuel .. how it should be imo

Why not get fuel when you're on the way to or from somewhere that's outside your local area (and hence not the 5 or so expensive petrol stations)?

I used to, but I rarely leave the area now, still if I didn't have the fuel lock it would be worth the trip to save 30c+/litre.

Best way is to vote with your feet :)
The price differences are now ridiculous. It used to be a few cents per litre different so each tank was only couple of dollars and it wasn't worth going a few suburbs away just to refuel. Now, i sometimes have to rethink that logic (I live in the CBD)!

  • Does Anyone Else Live Somewhere Where Fuel Is Always Cheap?

    • Yeah, wherever the 7/11 helicopter flies to.

  • Tasmania.
