Advice Please - Wood for Building The Buff Dudes Power Rack

Hi All,

I am wanting to build the buff dudes power rack (https://www.buffdudes.us/blogs/news/47856513-buff-dudes-diy-…) and just a bit unsure about the wood I should use. I'm stuck in 2 weeks quarantine at the moment so don't have the flexibility to visit the store.

I am thinking of using this pine wood from Bunnings (https://www.bunnings.com.au/100-x-100mm-3-0m-rough-sawn-h4-t…). Its rough sawn and branded as a landscaping timber so I'm hoping I can just sand the edges for a nice smooth finish and that it is strong enough to be used for supporting ~00kgs max weight for squats, and for pull ups (90 kg + up to 30kg weight vest).

Another option was this pine wood (https://www.bunnings.com.au/88-x-88mm-2-4m-f7-kd-h4-dar-trea…), but its more than double the cost, or this Oregon (http://timberandbuildingsupplies.com.au/product/100-x-75-f5-…), but for the relevant sizes it only comes in 75 x 75 or 100 x 75.

I picked the 100 x 100mm Bunnings variant as the buff dudes use 4 x 4 inch.

Any advice or timber alternatives welcome.

Thanks =)

    • Thanks, a bit smaller than what I'm after though =P

  • I'd stick with the 100x100 rough sawn pine - it's plenty strong and anything else is going to cost you more. This isn't fine furniture so no point spending extra for nice hardwood.

    • OK great, thanks. I assume I won't do myself any serious damage if I rub against a rough sawn vs a smooth edge? Not that I plan on developing a rack fetish..

  • You aren't going to be sanding that rough sawn sleeper down..would take ages. If you had a plane you could dress it to a decent finish.

    The dar would be closest to what they are using in the photos.

  • You might want some Buff Guy gene therapy too, if you wanna look like him.

  • Can you not just run on the spot and do a few push ups

    You shouldn’t be sanding rough sawn h4 treated pine. It’s treated with stuff to resist rot and termites and won’t be good for your lungs. Not to mention it’ll be ‘wet’ treated which doesn’t sand like dried timber.

      Ahh ok, thanks.
