GPU Upgrade - Not to Fancy Though

I'm somewhat overwhelmed by the options for GPU upgrades these days…so I am looking for a nice upgrade for my sons gaming PC GPU. He currently has a GTX 1070. He isn't looking for anything wonderful and expensive, he just wants a noticable improvement, he doesn't play 4k stuff, just stuff in 2k mainly.

Is there a recommended GPU for this? We have decided that a RTX 30xx may be overkill, but open to suggestions :)

Cheers..

Isn't the 1070 already kinda fancy? It doesn't meet the recommended spec for the current games though looking at benchmark sites. It will meet the minimum spec tho.

  • Do you really need an upgrade? A GTX 1070 should be able to play games fine on 1440p (not the same as 2K). May not max out settings but perfectly adequate on high. You'll also need to consider any bottlenecking from other PC parts. You can't throw in an 3090 with a 5 year old mid-range CPU and expect results.

It's not the best time to get a GPU right now due to high demand/supply constraints but you'll probably want a 3060Ti for future proofing.

    • His CPU is a Intel i7 6500K , would it need updating too ?

      • There's no such thing as a i7 6500K. I assume it may be an i7 6700K and yes, an upgrade would be beneficial as even an i5 10400F beats the i7 6700k by a decent amount in gaming. See here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lWfO9EYk5E

      • Is there any chance that you would want his old gaming PC? You could buy him a whole new one if you're feeling like you got money to burn.

A GTX 1070 is still quite high end. A GTX 1660 Super sounds like it would suit his needs for 2K gaming but the 1070 is still better by a marginal amount.

Hmm, ok. I have a GTX 1080ti in my PC but I very rarely play games. Mostly use it for browsing the web etc… Should I swap my 1080ti for my sons 1070 and then just buy him a better CPU and monitor maybe ?

It's his birthday in a few dayz :)

If you're rarely gaming then yeah, there's really no point of you having a 1080ti - give it to your son :)

1080ti was never CPU bound for me with my i7 4790k, so probably skip the CPU upgrade for your kid and just upgrade the monitor after swapping them around

    • Yes.

    • Am still using 1070 and it's decent for 1440p how ever 1080ti for web browsing is…….
      Swap it over

      • Before you do the swap, uninstall the GPU drivers from each machine, then do a clean install once cards swapped.

        • ok :) thanks

      I wouldn't bother with a CPU upgrade

  • What monitor then? 4k ?

    Just run it at 1080p.
