Fridges with Water Dispensers - Any Thoughts?

Hey all,

I'm the market for a new fridge and wondering what people's thoughts are on water dispensers built into fridges (non plumbed).

Specifically, do they produce instant water like a water cooler, or is it a matter of waiting for the water in the fridge to cool, then that's dispensed? (Couldn't find an answer on Google😞)

Thanks!
P.

If it's not plumbed then yeah you have to wait but if it's plumbed then it's instant. Also less hassle as you won't need to refill it.

It's dispensed straight away, just not cold. It's a basic mechanism

I prefer it to save hassle with plumbing it in

Can also swap out the water for anything else if you so desire. Wine dispenser anyone? 😉

I always though it’ll become an additional chore to clean. Googled and founded this https://www.youvegotmaids.com/house-cleaning/blog/how-to-cle…

Maybe better off having a water jug in the fridge in the long run.

If it saves you or your family money on soft drink then it's a good investment for instant chilled water. Could use a water jug but no one ever washes it out properly or refills anyway, it'll be your endless chore.

Non plumbed is essentially just filling up a cannister and having the tap on the outside of the fridge. You have to wait for it to chill, it doesn't chill as part of it's dispensing.

If it's anything like our household with the jug in there, it never gets filled up so you're left with an empty cannister and no chilled water. Plumbed is the way to go but obviously a lot more hassle if the plumbing isn't there.

We bought our fridge specifically for that (non plumbed), used it once and then never again. Just recently took it out of the fridge and realised the water was probably 2 years old. Using that space now for eggs and cheese.

Just put a bottle of water in the fridge, same concept lol.

Just add ice to your water dispenser or cup.

    Tada

I have the water dispenser in the fridge it's great. Just get one that's easy to clean

  • We recently bought the LG-G668PL (plumbed version) and are very happy with it. The water is chilled instantly and like mentioned before; no more empty jugs of water in the fridge cause no one could be bothered to refill it.

So far, the water dispensing feature has been used heavily - havent had it long enough to know what the cleaning effort is going to be like.

    • How do you feel about the French doors?

Initially we were looking at the French doors one, but when we were browsing them at Good guys changed over to Side by side for two reasons

1). Side by side means dont have to bend over much when accessing freezer as you can out common items at the top

        2) we don't use freezer much, so wanted something with smaller freezer and more fridge. The French door versions had massive freezers and lesser fridge space in comparison.

There was a Samsung french door unit we liked that allowed you to change one of the freezer compartments to a fridge, so you could go 1 freezer and 3 fridge. However, reviews of Samsung were not very good in terms of reliability as compared to LG.

  • whilst plumbed there's still a reservoir that holds the chilled water. when that gets depleted, the water isn't "chilled" anymore but will still be filtered
just means you don't have to keep filling that up manually

    • Was just about to say the exact same thing. They have a water tank that the water stores in and gets cold. Some brands of fridges have bigger water tanks then others and you’ll never empty it to get to the tap water temp.

Happy with plumbed LG GF-l706PL. Instant cold water.
It's like if you don't have water dispenser it dosent bother and if you have it, you use almost every time.

    • What are your thoughts on the French doors?

  • Have a Samsung French door fridge for over 5 years now and it has the plumed water dispenser. Works great and also filters and chills instantly. also has a ice maker built into it. Just have to change the filter every 8 months or so and I have never had any issues with it and it doesn't need to be cleaned ever as basically it gets used multiple times a day and water doesn't just sit inside it. Definitely get plumed, its a simple reliable solution that will last you forever and you will also have clean water as a part of that.

    Get plumbed. It's fantastic.

Wish we had plumbed, it is a pain to daily fill the container but it takes up no space like a jug of water and it’s convenient to just put a glass 🥃 up to the door and get instant cold water.

I have an Electolux bottom mount fridge with a water dispenser in the door
It was easy to connect the water, just screw the connector into the tap and then push in the tubing
After that, it was a matter of going up to the door with your container for your cold, and it is cold, filtered drinking water
My favourite drink in a half litre 3 peat Hawthorn glass mug, was a dash of raspberry & apple cordial with some moonshine and the rest was made up of water; if it was summer, ice was added - yum

I still have 2 litres containers of cordial in the fridge filled with water,
so I can take one outside when I go out to work in the garden

  • Thanks for the advice everyone! Going to look into getting a plumbed fridge with a plumber
