65” to Replace Pano St60 Plasma

Team,
It is my birthday in jan so am looking to spoil myself with a new tv. I currently have a 60” Panasonic st60 plasma. Still working fine however would like to replace it whilst there is a sale on vs it die on me and force me to pay non bargain worthy rates.

Requirements are
65”
Picture Quality over features.
I have a quality Hifi system so do not care for built in audio.
I use an xbox one S for Stan/Netflix/Disney/Amazon/Spotify. If the tv has these features built in then great however it is not required.
Even though I rarely play games I do not plan to replace the tv for 6+ years so it should ideally cater for the new gaming boxes.

I am shopping tomorrow so would really love your help.

Current candidates are:
Hisense 65Q8
Sony 9000H

However the wife said future proof it so will consider oled if there is a bargain price up for grabs.

If you have recently purchased a tv and are really happy with it please let me know.

Again… I be shopping tomorrow so time is of the essence!

Cheers

Sony 9000H unless you can spring for an LG OLED.

    End of search.

if you have 60 why upgrade to 65 you wont see much diff.
i suggest wait for 70 or 75 when you see around $1500-1800

i have 55 now, will be upgrading to 75 only

    • I am happy with the 60” size so a minor increase is enough.

I have the 2 1/2m projector screen out back with my spa (COVID project) so have the size covered when required.

Sorry don't have much to add but loved you saying team so wanted to say Thank you :D

I'd say Sony is probably the way to go from those two however like mentioned above if you can grab an LG OLED. They seem to be mentioned by most youtubers as the TV's to get.

    Also Happy Early Birthday!

You will basically have to get OLED coming from plasma.

    • This is something I am struggling to accept given my model plasma was one of the last to be sold.
It just doesn't make sense why I need to invest $4k+ to replace something that is based on 5yr old technology and only cost me $2k?

This is not a flame at you brendanm but rather at the situation I have found myself in.

      • +1

Yes, I also have an st plasma in 55". I also won't spend $4k+ on OLED. I still much prefer my plasma over my 65" 4k led tv. Not even close.

      • HDTVTest did a plasma vs OLED video a few months ago, comparing a ZT60 to an HZ2000. So, basically comparing the best of the best. I thought the plasma would have the edge in motion handling at least, since it’s impulse driven, but nope, it got smoked by the OLED in every aspect.

        OLED vs Plasma TV Comparison

I have a 50” ST60 I bought for $1300 so I agree, the value equation is nowhere near as good for OLED. But the fact remains OLED is better in every way so if you want a true upgrade it’s arguably the only way to go. I’m hoping the 65” CX or A8H drop to around $3k in the next month or so, then I’ll finally replace my ST60.

  • TCL x915. (8K) or c815 or x10.

The LG OLED65CX looks to receive pretty good reviews on AVForums and rtings.
    VideoPro has it at $3780.

Does anyone have this model? What are your thoughts?

    • $3687 here, shipping should be free for you to Brisbane https://www.mydeal.com.au/lg-65-oled-4k-smart-tv-oled65bxpta…

Still have a plasma myself (2011 Samsung), won't be moving to OLED anytime soon, at least until prices come back down. But the LG OLEDs are top of the range.

      • That’s the BX not CX, which has an older chipset and lower panel brightness. It’s probs worth paying the few hundred more for the CX.

        • Ah true, my bad. Yeah definitely worth the extra $100 from VideoPro then.

I made the switch from a 14 year old 50" Panasonic Plasma (perfect working order still) to a 77" LG OLED ( CXPTA) a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier.

Plasma picture quality was always superior to LED/LCD TV's until OLED came along. Now OLED reigns supreme.

I just hope the LG lasts as long as the Panasonic.

In you're scenario however I don't think you'll get the wow factor like I did given an increase of only 5"

Thanks tight-ass, I would love to add a few more inches but the wife said it wouldn’t fit in the small space….

      • Lucky you

      • that's what he said

  • +1

Yeah not worth the risk stuffing it into a tight space and possibly breaking your favourite toy!

That plasma is a great TV.. I have the 65 inch version.

    Still use it.

So I went for the LG OLED65CX. Brought Myer down to $3820. Video Pro was a little cheaper however I had points with Myer which made it a bargain.

Arrives on Thursday. Shitting bricks as this baby better be better than my Pano ST60….

For those in the Manly/Wynnum area The Good Guys have the slightly lower spec'd BX on display which they will let go for around $3300.

    • Move the plasma to the bedroom now?

      • +1

        The kids have earmarked it…

    • Nice, be sure to update us on what you think of it vs the Plasma!

  • +1

Very brief update on my purchase of the LG OLEDCX.
Picture quality is very nice even without making any adjustments.
Picture is very smooth which was something that annoyed me with the pano.
    Remote control is fantastic.
    GUI is nice.

Downside is I have a Yamaha avantage810 amp and surround sound setup which is now not being taking advantage of. This is because the audio out of the tv via ARC is only stereo. The tv does not passthrough the DTS or surround formats! Am very very frustrated and am hoping it is a config setting somewhere (in my defence a fair few GNT’s were consumed yesterday so not much time to dig in).

If anyone is using arc to output audio to an AV receiver and have the DTS signals coming through please let me know!

    • +1

All good. It was an arc setting on the tv.
      Super happy now.
Watched Mulan on Disney plus. Amazing colours.

      • Bugger. It will only output in Dolby digital 2 channel. I then need to use the amp to convert it into surround.
        Grrr.

  • Unless you're going OLED, it's not going to be much of an upgrade from 60 to 65". Has to be 70" + for it to be a worthwhile upgrade.

There's little point of buying a new one on sale just in case your old one dies.

In 6-12 months, it will most likely be cheaper.

When your Plasma dies, unlike a fridge, waiting a week or month for a replacement isn't going to be the end of the world.

    • Should have read the whole post before replying.

Congrats on the OLED. I'll upgrade from my plasma one day.

    • Except that the ST60 is 1080p.

I have one as well, nice TV but I had to replace the power board myself a few years ago, some also have a buzz when displaying white background (power board related I think)

      • I have the buzz, wondering if its a cheap fix.

  • For reasons I do not agree with LG have not included a DTS decoder into the CX model. This means that any internal apps that are playing multimedia that includes a DTS audio sound track well…you are up sh1t creek.
Apparently in passthrough mode the app needs to be able to understand the audio codec first. Which is why when I was trying to play rips stored on my plex server I was not getting any audio.

The workaround was that I configured the Plex app on the TV to only be compatible with Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus. This means that the server would transcode to Dolby Digital Surround and bingo. Proper audio.

Being a hifi audio fanboy this does make me cringe knowing it is transcoding first and therefore not the original. But better than nothing.

A side note. Historically I have used the plex app on my Xbox One S and fed the audio and video signal direct into the amp and then had it output the visual to the TV/projector.
I am now only using the TV and outputting the audio to the amp. Later this week I will fire the Xbox up and see if the pure audio signal passes through without need to transcode.
