Kogan 34" WQHD 1000R 144hz FreeSync HDR Gaming Monitor (3440x 1440) $529 + Shipping ($0 with First) @ Kogan

90

Just saw this today, it's different than the one on sale on Boxing Day, which had the same 1500R curve as the Xiaomi one.
Compared to the Xiaomi 34" display, this one is also Samsung VA panel, has the same peak brightness (300cd/m2) but with extra HDR support, better curve (1000R Vs 1500R), back panel RGB lighting, builtin speakers, better controls (single stick control, Samsung style).
Only draw back is slightly worse response time (4ms vs 7ms) and one less HDMI 2.0 port, but who uses HDMI 2.0 on a 144Hz monitor anyway.

7ms response time for a "gaming" monitor, you really are the entire circus Kogan.

Don't think 3ms will make a big difference on a VA display anyway..

    • Depend on if it's advertised response time or real response time. You will find plenty of 1ms advertised VA monitor actually closer to 7ms.

      • Based on how Kogan have reported this historically, it's actually the average g2g response time in the highest overdrive setting.

    • Kogan historically have reported the average g2g response time (10-90%) with the fastest overdrive setting turned on, which is a rare and generously-given reported metric.

Virtually every other manufacturer reports the fastest single g2g transition (10-90%) with the fastest overdrive setting turned on, which almost always proves to be deceptive, but otherwise useless.

The issue with VA will be the spread of these individual values, but the 1000R curve suggests this is as up to date as you can get from an ODM, as it is the same curvature as the latest Samsung series.

I would suggest this performs in the ball park of a Samsung G5 model, just with a wider colour gamut, which puts it ahead of the Xiaomi offering IMO. The only question mark would be out of the box colour accuracy, but Xiaomi are below average there while offering no sRGB clamp in their OSD settings.

If you're looking at the Xiaomi or the budget Samsung offerings, I would be looking at this instead, but I would suggest foregoing the ultrawide offering and get a Samsung G7
when it drops to ~$700, a price point they are actually overdue for in this region.

      • Very thorough, thanks.
I was wondering why the spec said OD:7ms.
Anyway I have bitten the bullet and bought one and was shipped out yesterday.
Eager to see how it is. I always wanted a ultra wide because I do mainly PUBG shooting and it should give me an edge.

Personally I suggest skipping anything sold by Kogan. Their after sales support is shocking….
I've come across numerous instances (family / work departments) who didn't heed advice, and bought Kogan (TV, monitor, etc.) only to regret it later when items fail, and they require support.

    • yea im worried about it lasting more than a year. how long until it failed for them?

      • Quite soon after the warranty period expired. TV/monitor issues ranged from PSU's failing, to screen's developing lines, or backlight issues.

    • me too!!!

    • Depends on the product really, they do not manufacture stuff so it depends on the product and ultimately who's the OEM/ODM is. Their power bank has been largely a hit with very reasonable quality.

    • I never had any bad experience with Kogan monitors or any monitors whatsoever and I always look for dead pixels…

However, with monitors (even the branded ones) if there are small issues like dead pixels then it can get annoying to deal with support. Viewsonic are some of the better ones with zero dead pixel policy but with Kogan, yeah IF you do have issues it will be painful to deal with…

Never trust what Kogan says. Support team doesn't hesitate to lie to you, just to keep you quiet.

Part of my oder placed with Kogan on 1 Dec, was pushed out till end of this month. I got another update this week that it's now pushed out to end of February.
In the support ticket I raised a week ago, I was assured it would arrive shortly…
Another 2 months, yeah time flies right …
Let's hope I never actually need them for support on the items.

This will make a great Kogan paperweight in the near future.

    I have the 1500R model.

I'd go as far as to say that HDR is actually a negative on these cheaper units. HDR400 is worthless over SDR without local dimming and the technical issues that come with games/videos that support it is a bit of a nightmare. The image quality is significantly worse for day to day use (super washed blacks). Even if you disable HDR on the monitor, some applications and games will pick up that the option is available and force it from their end. Playing back HDR linux iso's is also an absolute mess in this regard.

I'd only go this if the curve is a significant bother to you in the Xiaomi unit.

Pretty much any HDR400 monitors with no local dimming (cheaper or not, branded or not) you will find the HDR is irrelevant…

And with the technical issues, I think for HDRs just stick to TVs and consoles for now…
