Will my setup play Dolby Atmos?

  I have a similar set up and if Plex is running off your NAS through your shield it should play atmos if the movie /show etc is atmos. Hope you can get it working as you want it. I tested the Samsung soundbar you have and I really would like to get it. it sounds awesome. Good luck with you set up. It should work

  Atmos over ARC, is it possible even if you send it over PCM or whatever?

  I run a similar setup. I have the RU8000 Samsung, Q800T soundbar and 2017 Nvidia with Windows plex. What I did to make it work is run the nvidia shield directly into the hdmi port on the soundbar and then the soundbar into the arc port on the TV. If your TV doesnt do eARC which is the new standard up from just ARC for Atmos passthrough from the TV into the soundbar you need to go the other way. Nvidia into soundbar then soundbar into ARC. Can only go the other way if youve got eARC. Then plex will play atmos. If you have a movie with Atmos the little screen on the soundbar pops up with the word ATMOS when its working.

  I also upgraded to a HDMI 2.1 between the TV and the soundbar. This was before i discovered the TV didnt haveeARC and was likely unnecessary.

  Good news is the samsung one remote can still control the shielf via the passthrough on the soundbar. So no need for the shield remote.

    Thanks heaps, I'll give it a shot. I imagine this will still enable the FTA TV sound to come through the soundbar?

      Yes. Plug the soundbar hdmi into the arc port on the tv and any sound originating from the tv will come out the speakers still.

  Maybe not I don't think the Samsung TV can pass through Dolby Atmos based on https://www.flatpanelshd.com/samsung_nu8000_2018.php in the audio section. Plug it directly into the soundbar and you should get Atmos though.You will need to have Atmos content as well. Plex does seem to support Atmos via the NVIDIA shield so that should be OK.

  Run the Shield though the soundbar then to the TV.

  If you upgrade to the 2019 Shield you will need to disable Atmos on the TV to pass 4k 60Hz HDR though the sound bar. I just run the Shield at 24Hz as most HDR content I stream seems to be 24Hz native, and the TV is better than the Shield a motion smoothing.
