Chromecast 'No Devices Found'?

Head scratching time again…

So was around at 'ol mates this morning trying to get his Chromecast working. The CC connects up fine, I could cast to it from my android phone and cast Netflix from their iPhone but his Laptop (windows 10) just says 'no devices found'. It was working, and now it isn't.

Tried all the tips I could find online but still no joy. He has Norton 360 which I disabled to no avail. The only thing I could think of was that maybe Chrome did an update that broke things? I also tried Edge and it said 'no devices found' too but is based on Chrome so maybe is wasn't a great test?

Anyone have any ideas?

yeah the web browser can often be slightly dodgy in casting to chromecast. sometimes the browser detects it other times it doesn't

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

  • Have you tried searching on Google instead of posting on here?

Make sure you're on the same network as the CC: make sure the laptop is not connected to a hotspot, it's connected on the 5Ghz/2.4Ghz version of the network (whichever is correct), etc. If it's not on the same LAN, the CC and device won't detect each other.

It might help if you're more specific about everything that you've tried too.

    • Thanks, yep checked all that, they are both on the same wireless network at 2.4ghz.
      Tried resetting the CC.
Checked all the PC software was up to date.
Tweaked a few settings in Chrome related to casting (can't remember the details right now)
      Disabled firewall and AV

      • try rebooting your router?

  • Tried a different chromecast to rule that out?

  • Have you tried to check if Network discovery is turned on in Windows 10?

    • No I didn't, thanks for the tip. Though he did say it was working before?

      • so its fixed now?

        • Can't say, he's on the other side of town but I'll report back next time I'm over that way. Cheers

  • Have you tried resetting the chromecast. After that delete and add again on google home.

  • You have to use an app on you phone to get the CC to connect between tv and laptop as cc doesn't support pc anymore, but this app works. I had same problem with old CC, just updated to new CCtv and connects much better. App is Google Home.

  • I have had the same issue in the past.

In Chrome browser enter chrome://flags/ into the address bar and search and enable:

Cast Media Route Provider -> enable.

    If it doesn't help:

Connect to Cast devices on all IP addresses -> enable

    If it doesn't help:

Load Media Router Component Extension -> enable

I've also had to disable and then re-enable to make it work, too.

    • Ok cheers, I did try enabling those but will try disabling then re enabling them.

  • Check router doesn't have AP isolation enabled

  • Have you put Google Home on the laptop so it can detect the Chromecast?

    • I think I tired that but google home only works on Android/iphone. Unless there is a version for Windows 10 that I couldn't find?

  • I put it on my tablet which is Android but I have Samsung Internet and Chrome on it.

    • Thanks. The CC IS setup and they can cast from 2 phones…just not with the PC anymore.

      • Oh. Checked if your network is set to Private network instead of Public network.

  • It can be done I just can't remember how the PC connects now. Dose he have Chrome on the PC? More info here. https://www.techbout.com/setup-chromecast-on-windows-10-comp…

    • Yes he does. And it was working previously but has stopped for some reason. CC still works with other devices. Cheers

    • Using HDMI cable is the most simple and best method

  • Why on earth would you want to cast from a Chromecast to a laptop for gods sake??????

usually one connects either a Chromecast or laptop to a TV but not to each other.

Netflix, Youtube etc are all directly accessible via The web!

    • They don't have a smart TV. If I can't sort it out I might suggest they get a Firestick instead.

(p.s. they are trying to cast FROM the PC, not to it. :) )

You dont need a smart TV man.
Thats the whole point of this
Connect Laptop to TV via HDMI
        OR
Connect Chromecast to TV via HDMI
        Not both
        so simple.
        Dont complicate matters!

And yes. Firestick is GREAT in my opinion.

NB: For Chromecast both your phone and the Chromecast must be connect to same WiFi network

PM me if you need help

Ah OK, I see what you mean now. :)

I'll suss them out next time I see them.

  • I used to use the chromecastinstaller exe file on this page, might be worth a shoot, but I think it stopped working in the end and I had to use the the android setup somehow. HDMI cable is easy to use if they get stuck.
