Worth waiting 2-3 weeks as the prices for these will drop after the S21 announcement (even though they are rumoured to be of inferior specs).

    • is S21 going to be the flagship for 2021? i.e. not S30?

I'm a bit disappointed by what S21 offers.

      • s21 is going to be the flagship, they don't often skip so many numbers, and the s21 is more a incremental upgrade instead of a massive jump.
You will notice this with many brands even Apple, it will be incremental for 2-3 phones then a massive change comes along.

Same with Samsung, where S8 and S9 was a similar phone. S10 and S20 was similar design.

        • that's bad news for me. I've been on the S6, S8, S10 (even numbers) cycle which were the big revisions. The S5, S7, S9 (odd numbers) were the incremental upgrades (Apple would call it the 'S' editions) so I was always getting the major update in design, instead of the simple spec bump.

But it looks like S20 (which is equivalent to S11) was the major update, skipping an incremental update, and the schedule I'm on is switching to the incremental cycle? S30/21 (equivalent to S12 on the old naming scheme) has turned from major redesign to incremental update on previous year. I'm due for the 2021 flagship but if it's going to put me on incremental update cycles from here on, I might switch to LG, or even a Chinese brand if they have stopped using the iOS clone launcher with no shortcuts/widgets.

S10 and S20 was similar design.

S20 made big improvements over S10. It added the 100X space zoom, and 120hz screen. S21 is looking like the same phone as S20, and they might be admitting it by calling it S21 instead of S30.

          • @lostn: Looks like the major difference from S20 to S21 would be the 5nm processor which usually will help with battery life.
Also the redesign which is very odd to come in, usually a redesign would be a massive jump in terms of hardware too (e.g. S9 to S10 the design was changed with a lot less bezel).

As for Exynos Processors, Appears Samsung has upped the game this time, with initial benchmarks of the new Exynos 2100 it beats Snapdragon 888 in multi-core benchmarks and almost matches it in the single core benchmark.
Exynos 2100 is said to have scored 1,108 points in the single-core test and 3,963 points in the multi-core workload
Snapdragon 888 5G is said to have achieved 1,135 and 3,794 points in single and multi-core tests

Supposedly Exynos 2100 also embeds the 5G modem onto the SoC which will decrease the power usage. This is still unverified, some reports point to it being embedded.
Also the battery life has been speculated to be 35% better on the Exynos Variant of S21 compared to its equivalent S20.

            • @lplau: I don't consider a faster CPU to be a major redesign. That's just an incremental upgrade, similar to iPhone 4S, 5S, 6S models. Every year phones will do that.

A major upgrade is when the body is redesign and new features are added. S21 isn't doing anything we haven't seen before.

I might keep my phone for another year or switch to LG.

            • @lplau: How was the Exynos vs snapdragon on the S20 lineup? is the battery performance and actual CPU/phone performance that notable a difference? I'm on a S8+ and looking for an upgrade. Saw the Oppo Find X2 pro has gone down to $1100 before, and was contrasting to the S20 lineup which tends to be $300-500 higher for the equivalent if not worse specs than the oppo. I presume waiting for a S21 lineup will also bring high $1k price tags also? Just wondering if it's actually worth the wait given the alternatives (e.g. Oppo Find x2 pro, or even waiting for the x3 announcement?)

    S20fe 5g was 700 without trade in

I got the S20+ from the Sydney Samsung store (they didn't have any 5G models in S20 or Note) for $544 on 27 Dec. That was discounted sales price of $999, minus $155 trade-in for my old S9 and then $300 trade-in bonus.

    • Did they not have 5G even in S20 FE?

      • Hey! Was the S20 plus in stock when you posted?

        Thanks!

        • There was stock when I bought but that was back on 27 Dec and they were running out quick. I forgot to say they were even discounting cases so managed to pick up the Samsung LED case for $28.

No. There was an A71 5G which was also on special. The only other 5G phone I could I get was I think the Note 20 Ultra which wasn't on a deal.

  • No s20+ models available?

Glad I jumped to Oneplus for my latest upgrade. Even Samsung on sale with a trade in is too expensive.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus - out of stock :(

    • +1

I think it was there when I posted

  • Thanks. I upgraded my wife's S10e for a S20 FE. Did it online and took advantage of the extra $50 for signing up to marketing emails (will delete it once the phone is shipped).
Ended up costing $209.00 out of pocket after the $240 + $300 trade in.

    • Where did you do the trade in? Via online? Do you have to send the phone to samsung by post?

      • Yeah all online. They send the new phone and include a post bag to send in the trade in.
