  • Doesn't Reverb G2 have serious controller tracking issues?

    • +1

I have one, it uses inside tracking so not as good as ones that have outside in. It does the job 99% of the time.

      • it supports base stations if you buy them separately. You'll need a different controller though. The touch controllers of outside in HMDs is not as good as this one.

The Index controller could have been good, but it only has two buttons and one trigger. The buttons are mirrored on both controllers, so instead of 4 buttons and 2 triggers, you only get 2 buttons (X,Y) total and 1 trigger. That's lame and will limit the possible experiences you can have on the Index.

This controller has 4 buttons (X,Y,A,B) and 4 triggers. The stick is also clickable.

Not as bad the cosmos apparently… but not quite up to par with the Quest 2.

I've had the G2 for a couple of weeks now.

This thing was made for smaller heads. Or maybe my head is just too wide. The curvature of the face shield is very accute. There's a big gap between my eyes and the goggles. My nose doesn't even touch the nose piece. This makes the FOV smaller for me and light gets in. I don't have this problem with other HMDs I've tried. It also makes the speakers not align with my ears for me. There's no 3.5mm jack on the HMD itself, so you need to run a cable to your case if you want to use your own headphones. Make sure it fits your face. Try it on first before you plonk down $1k.

Also, they use 1.5V batteries for the controllers. Your eneloops and LADDAs are 1.2V. You're going to need new batteries. 1.5V rechargeables are hard to find.

Another complaint I have is with the breakout box. This box has two cables that connect to the back of your PC and one cable to the headset. These cables are not modular. They are permanently connected. When you're done with your headset, it's not easy to pack it away. You have to remove all cables and next time you want to set it up, reconnect all cables. You can't simply remove the headset cable and leave the breakout box connected to the back of your case. Or, you leave the entire thing permanently connected, if you have a place to store it on your desk when not in use. The cables are long and thick though. It will get in the way.

Also, the part of the cable that connects to the HMD itself, requires you to remove the face shield to insert it in. Then you replace the face shield once connected. To remove it, you have to remove the face shield. This isn't hard to do, but it's cumbersome, and the cable itself is difficult to connect because it goes in very deep, and you can't see. It took me many tries before I got it in properly. I assumed it was plugged in but it wasn't. The design of the socket is bad. You'll understand why when you try it.

Tracking is not as good as a Quest because there are blind spots. They don't have cameras on the edges. There are cameras on the front and sides, but not the boundary in between the sides and the front. There's also no camera facing downward, so it can easily lose track of your controllers when held low.

The back of the headset has a plastic cable clip that holds the cable in place. If you lean back on your high backed chair with headrest, that clip will get dislodged and fall off and the cable will not be held in place. This headset was not designed for you to be able to rest your head. They came so close. They don't have a knob that sticks out like with the Index, which makes that HMD painful if you bump the back of the headset onto a head rest. But you still can't rest your head. If they replaced that plastic ring holding the cable with a velcro strap, it would have been fine to rest your head. You want to be comfortable when gaming.

The face shield's cushion is made of fabric. This makes it feel nicer than pleather but it will absorb your sweat (and you will sweat — this thing gets warm and my partner thought I had the heater on) and will be difficult to clean. I can only speak for myself but because my face is too wide for the face shield, it did not feel comfortable. It was jamming into my the sides of my face and the sweet position (position where the screen is sharpest) was unstable. Slight movement (which it was very prone to) would make the screen go out of focus.

The screen looks good if it fits your face. But some questionable design decisions (easily correctible in a future revision) leave a lot of room for improvement.

If you're not in a hurry I'd wait. If you buy this, be prepared to accept that it's not an end game HMD, and expect to buy an improved HMD a few years from now.

    Try before you buy.

Based on my experience, I think it's promising but falls short and leaves a ton of room for improvement. 6/10.

Continuing from above, it gets the big things right (the screen is the best available on a consumer product). But it misses on the small things. If you're looking for a headset that you will keep for a long time and not need to replace, this isn't it. I would wait and see what G3 brings.

No single thing I mentioned above would be a deal breaker (except maybe that it was intended for smaller heads than other HMDs I have used), but all of those little things in conjunction make me wish I'd waited to see what's on the horizon. I based my purchase decision on the recommendation of VR youtubers. I wish I had an opportunity to try it on before buying though. I waited 3 months after paying for it before I finally received it.

In Superhot with the G2, throwing objects felt very off compared to how natural it felt on the PSVR. Throwing just wasn't reliable on the G2 and is nothing like what you expect based on your motion. This made the game unplayable, since you can't beat the stages without throwing items. You will miss and get killed before you can kill the enemy. PSVR had tracking issues of its own that I thought the G2 would solve but it introduced its own issues.

The Quest 2 might be the better option if you don't mind the Facebook thing. Cheaper also. I have not tried it myself so I can't say whether there will be noticeable latency if you use the oculus link cable. I imagine there would be some latency since you are streaming the picture instead of outputting the direct feed from the GPU and occasional compression artifacts. But maybe it's good enough that you won't notice it. The facebook thing is a deal breaker for me though.

Surely the G1 at half price is 90% as good as the G2. Same resolution and many other features the same.

    • it's controller is no good though. And that's major for a gaming device. It limits what games you can play.

      • It's fine for cockpit simulators
