Phone and SIM - Any Good Deals to Replace Motorola G5S Plus

Just had an ungraceful end to my Motorola G5S Plus which has served me quite well over the last few years.

I'm not currently contracted with anyone other than month to month with Optus, currently paying $43.45/month for 80GB with Optus. Which I'm quite happy with. But need a new phone today / tomorrow.

Anyone know of a good deal worth while to get a new phone? I don't mind getting in on a plan up to a max of 12 months.

I'm currently thinking of the JB Hi-Fi Telstra 60GB 12month plan for $69/month with $300 vouchers. Then purchasing a handset at JB. Or going to the $49/month 60GB plan, no vouchers, and buying a refurbished iPhone 8 for $379 from Boost.

Any other ideas / options?

  • To replace your Moto G5S I would consider the Pixel 4A or the larger 4A 5G or the Samsung S20 FE (fan edition). Since you like holding onto your phone for a while the Pixel will be supported for another few years by Google.

I would opt to go Boost per month then buy the device outright. Unless you wanna pay full retail at JB…. i'd say shop around i'm sure you can find something decent, but since you need something either today or tomorrow then perhaps not possible.

  • Apart from aforementioned JB or TGG mobile plans with voucher, I can't think of any that will benefit your circumstances.

Or going to the $49/month 60GB plan, no vouchers, and buying a refurbished iPhone 8 for $379 from Boost.

You would risk your local Coles not stocking iPhone today/tomorrow.

  • +1

wait until tomorrow and call jb and tgg as thurday is usually when new promos come in

  • Telstra has $250 welcome credit for a pixel 4a 5g ($66ish pm for 12 months) if you opt for a post paid plan ($55 pm is the lowest). I suppose you could port out to a cheaper service after two months and use the $250 credit to pay off the device.

    • Wouldn't you still have roughly $420 left to pay on the device after just 2 months + $250 credit?

      • Yes that's right. I ended up not going this method because even though the online support confirmed my calculation is right, at the store they said I need to buy the device outright (contrary to their website) and the $250 credit can only be used to pay off Telstra bills (can't transfer back to bank). Only realised later while trying out their online sign up option that you can indeed pay monthly for the device which means you should be able to use the credit to pay off the device after cancelling. By then it was too late for me as I already went to another store and got another phone.
