Insurance Wording - Is a Parked Car "in My Charge" ?

Dear OzBargainers,

I want to be sure the insurance is gonna cover me if my car gets damaged while parked when I'm not there. I'd say it's still in my charge even if I'm away, but I'd appreciate your opinion!

The wording of exclusions is "where the Rental Vehicle is not driven by You or in Your charge"

Now I'm asking because I've been done over in a similar situation before, not in Oz, and not gonna purchase an useless insurance.

Cheers!

    Full clause:-

Where the Rental Vehicle is not driven by You or in your charge or is driven by a person not named on the Vehicle Rental Agreement (up to 8 additional drivers).

This refers to if you 'lend' the vehicle to someone else. So if it's parked while you're not there and you have not given the keys to anyone else (whether to drive, look after, clean, whatever), it's still 'your' vehicle.

Double check policy in terms of theft as that's a different concept. Always call the insurance company before you purchase policy if there's anything you're not clear on. It's literally their job to help.

Buy insurance from a reputable company if you can, even if it's a few dollars more. Can save you hassle in long term.

    • They're taking their time to reply…which might not be a good sign haha. I'll call them!

Should always read the full clause, rather just parts.

    • Yep I read the full clause, this is the only part that makes me doubt because if I'm not with the vehicle, how can I be in charge of it?
I've seen some sneaky moves when it comes to T&Cs, wanted to be sure this isn't one of them ;)

You've got (control of) the keys, so you are still in charge of it! It wouldn't be if you've given the keys to someone else.

The ombudsman would rip them a new one if they tried to use the above as a sneaky get-out-of-jail card.

        • Cheers mate

Got rental vehicle insurance with your credit card?

check the wording of the rental vehicle insurance that comes with the credit card.

the last time i browsed through the fine print, i vaguely remembered that you have to purchase the rental vehicle excess cover first, before the credit card's rental vehicle insurance will cover you. I think that was an ANZ card.

any experts here on OzB to advise on this topic please?

      • purchase the rental vehicle excess cover first

Huh? All rental vehicles (at least well known companies) have insurance already, purchased by the rental company. If you get into an accident, there is an excess you would have to pay. You can pay extra to reduce the excess charge, or have zero excess.

        • i believe the default excess is $4000, the excess reduction cover reduces the excess to $650(?) or $0.

my understanding of the t/c of my previous cc was that i had to buy that excess reduction cover first before it will cover the rest of the excess.

i didn't really bother to read that deeply cos that was March 2020 - entire Au was in lockdown.

          • @AirbusA389: I had a ANZ CC with complimentary insurance, afaik, it didn't mention any of that back in 2016. Looking at the Info booklet now, it's still the same, doesn't seem to say anything that buying an excess reduction.

        • They do have insurance, but as Airbus mentioned there is an excess, which can go as high as $5000 (for each incident with shitty rental companies (Hi Thrifty)). Also roof, windshield, tyres are not covered, which means you'll have to pay full cost of replacement if any damage happens

    • Credit card vehicle insurance will only cover the excess, and only if you adhere to the agreements in your rental contract. ie. if the rental contract says you're not allowed to lend other drivers not listed as additional drivers, but you do it anyway and your friend hits a tree, your CC insurance may not cover you.

      • I'd say most insurances won't cover you if you do something outside their terms. OP did say the car will be parked so shouldn't have an issue there?

        • Indeed my question is for a (legally) parked car as I understand T&Cs for other scenarios. But no credit card cover anyway!

    • Nope, I do not have a credit card that offers excess reduction on rentals!
