PayPal A/C Hacked

Hello guys

My PayPal a/c was used today on some website in USA. I have tried to call PayPal but they’re closed now. I have also informed the bank for the same. The person who ordered using my account has given some random address (seems like shipping forwarder agent. I don’t use PayPal much but recently purchased some shoes from lacoste au 2 days ago using chrome browser on iPhone as safari was not able to process my order. Could any one please tell me that how long it will take to get my money back.

Will bank or PayPal will get my money back?
Thanks

Login to your paypal, click on the unauthorised transactions, click 'report a problem', click 'I need to report unauthorised activity' then file the report.

The process and timeframes are all explained there.

Happened to me a month or 2 ago, I called the contact number of the store they purchased off and told them it was unauthorized and I'm going to cancel payment so cancel it on their end. Filed the dispute with PayPal (2am) and by the time I woke up, PayPal had cancelled the transaction and refunded my money

    • Just tried to call the store but they’re closed Atm. I have sent an email to them.

  • Transaction is pending and got this message “ We're sorry, we can't complete your request

We’re sorry, you can’t file a case on this type of transaction. Please refer to our User Agreement for more details” :-(

I have just sent email to PayPal.

    • What kind of transaction is it then?

    Do you have 2FA enabled?

    • No
      But just enabled it now.

And do it on everything else…

        Gmail
        Cashrewards
        ebay
        Etc
        Etc

        Everything. Do it now.

        • Sure mate.

          Thanks 👍🏼

Could have been your email that was hacked, giving them the paypal. You also said that you purchased from "lacoste au"? So Lacoste.com.au? not ebay or anything like that? Your bank should be able to reverse it quickly rather than waiting for Paypal.

    • But if my email was hacked then how come the hacker got my PayPal password?

I bought some stuff from Ebay on 7th Dec but my recent purchase was from lacoste 2 days ago. I am also going to inform lacoste as well because the payment was giving me errors while placing my order but it was finally processed.

      • More likely that one your systems is infected with a trojan/virus.

        • Do iPhones get trojans?

More likely the same password used for multiple sites and a breached sites password is in the wild

Just called the actual store customer service in USA. The lady was really helpful and stopped the order from the warehouse and she’s going to inform the bank and PayPal. She also said that wait for an email from us.

    • Ok, did the bank confirm that money was taken out? There are spam or phishing email that says your paypal was used and gives you a number to call. At that point you are on a fake version of paypal. Hopefully this has resolved it.

      • Yes because I have received notification in CBA app.

sorry to hear that. I also enabled 2FA sometime back after SB leak. Make sure to change all other accounts with the same password.

    • Does SB has 2FA?

      • +1

I think so. I meant that I enabled Paypal 2FA after that. Had to change a load of passwords as well. Now I use different password for each account. Lesson learned.

Just downloaded AVG ANTIVIRUS which has detected “leaked SB password 19th nov,2020”.

So you used the same password for PayPal and shopback?

First step shouldn't be enabling 2fa, first step should be getting something like lastpass and implementing unique strong non memorable passwords on all critical sites.

      • Yes unfortunately same password for SB & PP.

Don't get LastPass. Get Bitwarden, it's free and open source.

          • @[Deactivated]: Same same.
I have no issue with lastpass but have been meaning to try bitwarden

Despite being not open source I doubt you'll find any security researchers/experts that doubt LastPass's credentials/security implementation.

            • @SBOB: I was more approaching from a free updates and new features type of direction compared to paying for last pass :)

Same happened to me 2 days back. PayPal was not helpful. Raised dispute online and contacted via phone same response that my transaction was not unauthorised and allowed money taken from my account $1240.

    • Just curious where was the money spent?

Yew but it says security breach for all my emails.

😂 Even if you put anyone’s email still says breached.

It is a legit site where he maintains a list of many many data breaches which have been leaked online, which are collated together.

He also offers an API which some password managers and browsers use to identify breached sites/username/passwords to assist in notifying end users.

My Paypal account was hacked 2 years ago. Instead of using it to buy stuff they attempted to tranfer $2000 from my linked NAB acount into my Paypal account. Paypal and my bank refused to accepted any responsibility [Paypal: "We're not a bank". Bank: "We can't stop Paypal transactions". Anyway, long story short, I implimented 2 step verification before the $2000 appeared in my Paypal account. When it did, I tranfered it back into my bank account.

I have also called the bank too and they said you’re covered for any unauthorised transactions. They’ve blocked my card and dispute has been lodged and advised it generally takes about 3-10 business day.

My PP account was hacked about 2 month ago. I'm 99% certain it's due to the Shopback breach last year. To be fair, I should have been a bit wiser than to have the same password for my SB and PP accounts.

As others have mentioned, log into PP and dispute the transaction via 'report unauthorised activity'. Then contact your bank to inform them. It's a fairly straightforward process but can take a few days (up to a week) to resolve.

    • Pp wouldn’t let me report any pending transactions. Their call centre is mon-fri but I did email to Pp, called the actual business in Usa to cancel this unauthorised order and also informed my bank

  • OP, google "two factor authentication", and then set it up for PayPal or any other accounts that support it.

    • Yes did it now.

    Update:-PAYPAL HAS REFUNDED THE AMOUNT.

I got a notification today that $1 Authorisation was declined for my second credit card which was attached to PayPal because I locked my card on friday.

Also received 10 notifications of address change and asked PayPal and they said that information was delayed because you changed the passport and 2fa on friday.

    Very confusing.
