Purchased a Black Forest from a Bakery and It Was Frozen

It was $38…do I have a right to complain? Or is that normal and I should of asked first.

Update the store has a sign up saying cakes are baked fresh everyday hmm….

It's normal. Put it in the fridge for a few hours

With the bakery I buy from, they say that i have to order ahead if I want to eat it at the time of purchase. I asked why once, and it was because they were frozen.

This was from a major bakery chain.

Yep, most places have frozen goods. Same with The Cheesecake Shop…

I think The Cheesecake shop starting frozen in recent years, they used to be make to order on the day.

The Cheesecake shop went downhill so much and I refuse to buy from them anymore

This is what Michel's Patisserie did moving away from selling "fresh cake" to "frozen" cakes at its franchise stores.

    • +4

Most franchisers have no idea of baking, they just do a crash course to look the part.

  • I think it depends on a bakery so I would ask to know ahead.

The cakes these chain bakeries sell are nasty these days.
Frozen, imitation cream, lots of nasty preservatives and additives.
It's actually really sad. All while still charging top dollar.

    • +6

That's it, at least if you're not paying much, you can keep your expectations low. I bought a black forest cake recently from spudshed here for like $6-7 and it was decent. I'd hate to pay $30+ for equivalent quality

Not sure why people negged the comment, have restored the balance.

Most of the price of what we eat retail are mostly cost of rent and labor. The cost of production (farm gate) is pretty low. They can give people and empty printed box and the cost would be like $20. Difference between a good and bad cake is very little to do with the raw materials but to do with the price to make it fresh on site rather than getting it from frozen mass produced.

Difference between a good and bad cake is very little to do with the raw materials

          VERY STRONGLY disagree!!

Using quality materials, like real chocolate, real fresh cream, real butter, real fresh products is the key between a "plastic" cake and a real one.

Raw materials used are the essence of a quality product.

Real ice cream needs fresh rich cow's cream, not pig fat just to make it creamy.

          • @LFO: Okay mate. I'll give you

real chocolate, real fresh cream, real butter, real fresh products

You put it together into quality product.

You wouldn't give real good hard wood to a crap carpenter and they are going to give you a really good outcome. You can give a good carpenter bad wood and they can make the best of it.

            Think about it.

Give a Ferrari to someone who got their licence yesterday and expect them to drive like an F1 pro.

I work in a supermarket bakery, basically all the instore made stuff is made from scratch and not frozen. If you don't know what you're talking about you're better off saying nothing.

      • +4

I can't believe people like imitation cream more than fresh.
I think it taste disgusting. Also gave you an up vote even though I disagree with your comment.

      • All bread and rolls are fresh baked, most of anything else I'd guess was most likely frozen products.

    • The sad thing is it wasn’t a chain bakery. Just a small local bakery that sells mainly cakes only.
I’ve purchased 3 times from here. The first time it was really fresh and nice so I purchased again and thought it was strange how it was a bit soggy. 3rd time I went to cut it and it was frozen. Never again.

If i purchased a $38 cake from a bakery i would absolutely expect that it would NOT be frozen when i received it.

Substitute "bakery" for cafe/restaurant/fastfood/etc and anything you order at other places you would ALSO naturally expect to receive NOT frozen.

    • You think the average cafe has a little kitchen back there where they are making 50 different kinds of cakes and tarts and stuff every day?

      • +4

Except most buy from outside suppliers with the aim to get through them before they go stale. Frozen or fresh, they still demand the same price, which is pretty bad

Bear in mind, many of these places are charging like $8 per slice of cake, for a cake which could be defrosted.

    • The day I pay $38 for a cake, I'm going to seek professional help.

I love myself some black forest cake. The last four Black Forest cakes I've bought from Colesworths have all been somewhat frozen to various degrees.

I guess I didn't learn my lesson the first three times.

It is Winter in the Black Forest

Yes itrs normal for cakes to be frozen
Particlarly from the chain stores which make them in a factory and then ship them out to thier stores.

Even the cakes you buy in Coles and Woolwoths are shiped and stored frozen.
You will notice they are cold when they first bring them out to the shelves.

They should have told you though to let it thaw out first.

Anyway no basis for a complaint.

Its like buying a pack of frozen vegetables from the supermarket then complaining they are frozen

    • +6

"pack of frozen vegetables from the supermarket"

Except the O.P. bought it from a bakery, so it is like buying a bunch of carrots from a green-grocers and finding they were frozen..

  • The thing that irks me about some supermarket stuff is that it "has been thawed your convenience". How about selling it frozen and I'll thaw it at my own convenience.
