I'm thinking of getting my hubby an ipad for xmas…not sure if I should get the 3g version or not…or whether the ipad is worth the extra $ over a cheaper tablet..? To answer your final question, yes, an ipad is well worth the extra cost over any other type of tablet. They are more functional, faster, easier to use, and have better battery life than any other tablet.
I would suggest you get a 3G model, since it's handy to have internet wherever you go. iPad's are great for travelling, and you don't want to be paying ripoff hotel wifi rates. iTunes match and iCloud mean that you don't need to take up lots of space on the iPad for music, so you can get away with buying a 16gb model.
