Buy Old MacBook or New MacBook

Hi, I am in the market for a Macbook. Not yet sure if Air or Pro, but regardless here's my current dilemma…

I can get a 2019 Macbook Pro i7 512GB SSD 16GB RAM in excellent condition for $1650, or the base M1 Pro for $1999 (I know there were sales recently I've now missed).

The key differences (even though M1 only has 256GB and 8GB RAM) incl 10hrs vs 20hrs battery, and 4 core vs 8 core. Looking at reviews, the 8 core really makes a difference in performance.

I'm using it mainly for web apps (I know Chrome is RAM heavy), productivity software (Slack etc) and the occasional graphics software.

I would watch out for the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) and the MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019) as they have the horrid butterfly keyboards which many people have had problems with…

      Ah I didn't realise there was a current sale, you're a legend!

      • Ideal options:
1- Wait for a 2021 MacBook Pro 13in, based upon the next-gen design using the Apple M2 chip. The second versions usually tend to be good upgrades, where the initial versions are not worth paying to be an early adopter.

2- Buy a 2020 MacBook Air, with Apple M1 chip, the cheapest base model

3- Buy a Used MacBook Pro:
        A: Late-2019 rMBP 16in, with Core-i9 and 8GB-M5500 Pro dGPU
        B: Mid-2015 rMBP 15in, with Core-i7 and 2GB-M370x dGPU
        C: Early-2015 rMBP 13in, with Core-i5 and Iris iGPU

  • Best to get a Thinkpad

  • Can you wait? There will be another sale at some point.

  • Is it true that to get 16GB memory for new M1 it can only be bought from the Apple Store through customisation? Retailers don't stock the 16GB version?
