Discussion on Fuel Consumption

So what's the general consensus for fuel consumption for your average OzBargainer? What are you driving and what does your average fuel consumption look like? Is there a point where you would consider selling your vehicle if it consumed too much and if so, what is your limit?

I don't do city stop-go driving but I do get caught in bumper to bumper fairly often, I am fortunate enough to currently have two cars to choose from

Car A (cheap daily run around) does 8L/100km with air-con on and pushing the motor to keep up standard traffic flow with the masses, with a 1.5L 4 cylinder motor @220,000km's, I feel that's "normal"

Car B (weekend car) does 11.4L/100km mixed but driving it 80% normal 20% lead foot, 3.2L 6 Cylinder motor @ 140,000kms, I feel that's "reasonable"

Given how cheap fuel can be obtained for myself, I generally don't feel that there is any car I would not buy to drive and enjoy, well maybe a V8 but maybe some of you big V8 boys can chime in and tell me how much your beast drinks.

$0 on fuel I have a full EV

      flexing

    • You still have to pay for your electricity though. And pay for Tesla superchargers. So not free

      • Hyundai ioniq.. i have 6Kw solar at home. and i usually just charge my car at work

        • Well your work is paying for it then.

          • @Quantumcat: yes i work there, they pay me a good wage and in turn i make them at least 10x the amount they are paying me .

@Archi: That doesn't mean the electricity you use to run your car comes out of thin air.

That would be like if you worked at a petrol station and got petrol for free as a perk, saying that your car is 0L/100km

      You need CO2free number plates.

      • "0LP100"

  • 8L/100 for your economical option seems pretty high. But I've never had bumper to bumper traffic regularly so not certain how bad it makes it.

My golf sits around 6L/100 with a 30min commute.

    • That is pretty good , in the daily i see at best 4.5L/100km on the highway but yeah just little 1.5 Litre non turbo engine with SOHC so i have to really put my foot down all the time for it to go anywhere at a reasonable pace to keep up with the flow of traffic. With AC On as well so by comparison it still seems decent.

Is your Golf a TSI or GDI out of curiosity or the polo?

      • it's a twincharged 118TSI, I've not managed to get it into the 4's

8L/100km is pretty standard for the 2000s-early 2010s era of small inline fours. They work fairly hard in acceleration and keeping up with traffic. My 2.0L civic was the same. Great on the highway but if you're in stop start or doing say 50km/h then accelerating to 80 or 100km/h a lot (typical traffic-y highway commute) you'll get more like 8 or 9L/100km.

The new gen of small turbo'd engines are a different beast.

  • ive had several 351 v8's and owned a 200 series v8 petrol.
A v8 will idol arround and use 10-15l/100km then drink it like its water when you thrash it.

Who cares really unless you will be doing 50,000km per year.

My harley chews though fuel but its 150rwhp+ but tonnes of fun.

lets say you do 200km per week, a v8 may use 5L per 100km more so 10L extra of fuel $15 who cares.

Should in theory be more reliable as its doing less work.

  • I have one car that uses 16L/100km petrol and one that uses 12L/100km diesel. Yikes!

    • Wtf is the petrol vehicle??!?!

We used to have a nissan patrol (on gas) and I calculated it used ~20L/100km. Not good…

      • You will always use more LPG in comparison to petrol. you would probably use 20-30% more, but the trade off is you get 3L of 'gas' for the price of 1L of petrol. Still much better off

        • Oh I'm well aware of the tradeoff. It was just astonishingly bad for a vehicle that was pretty gutless lmao.

          • @[Deactivated]: That consumption and gutless, equals it was badly set up.
Every conversion in last 30 yrs from 1lit rice burners to 6lit plus rockets, all roughly 10% more max gas usage to petrol usage. You should have gotten a decent tune up.

            • @doctordv8: Ehh it's not so much gutless, that was me being melodramatic. They're a massive car, and the gearing and power delivery always felt more like a tractor than anything else. Brief torque down low, loooong throw upshift, brief torque down low… and so on. I think it was running ok, though I could be wrong.

        • but the trade off is you get 3L of 'gas' for the price of 1L of petrol

I had a NL Pajero a few years back which was fitted with an oldschool LPG system. LPG was 90c per litre and 91 was about 1.40. So the saving for me was only marginal.

I ended up taking it off gas because it had a 40 litre petrol tank and a 70 litre LPG tank, which was completely impractical. The petrol economy improved with the LPG system off, to the point where I think it cost around the same to run as LPG.

PS best economy I saw on the Pajero on petrol was about 14l per 100 on the highway. Around town was probably around 18l per 100. Was my daily driver for over a year…

      • V6 Hilux, drinks the juice

        • Geez no kidding. Really drinks it.

        • 3.4 or 4.0L?

        • I get ~11L/100km in a 2wd 4.0 auto

  • +1

Yeah got a v8 myself (LS400) and it chews through 14-16L/100km in urban Sydney driving. Out of the city I'm at 8-10L. No complaints here, but then again due to COVID ill be lucky to have clocked up 5k kms in the past year.

  • 2011 Mazda 3 @ 120k

Since August 2020 (when I started tracking), so not a lot of tanks in there yet; and missing most of the history.

    L / 100km
    Minimum 7.42
    Average 9.30
    Maximum 10.84

Is there a point where you would consider selling your vehicle if it consumed too much and if so, what is your limit?

Realistically, probably not. Without something being really wrong with the car, I doubt the economy would get so bad that I would be looking to replace the vehicle. More likely that whatever issue/s are causing the bad economy cause me to replace it. But then most people would probably think the same (IMO).

Do the maths on fuel consumption over a year including your fuel costs and km driven.

You will find that the difference between a 6L/100km car and an 8L/100km car is a couple hundred bucks at maximum. It is absolutely not worth changing vehicles to a newer and more complex model unless you are upgrading from ancient tech with high maintenance costs and thirsty fuel consumption. Unless you do a sideways upgrade (i.e from a 10k 6cyl to a 10k turbo i4 that does 5L/100km) money isn't really a factor in this decision as much as it feels like it is.

I get around 10l/100km of diesel. Running a 4wd ute around town is still cheaper than buying a second car to ‘save fuel’.

I track my usage and on a recent highway trip found there was a fuel system fault because consumption didn’t drop to around 8l/100.

8.3L/100km with a mix of freeway and general city driving. This should be average for most people with a 2.0L/2.5L engine vehicle.

  • Long term (2+ years) I'm sitting on 6.2L/100klm in a 2018 i30 SR which is used 95% for highway driving. Best I've ever seen is 4.9L/100klm with some very light driving on regular 91 RON unleaded.

  • 2016 i30 with 1.6L CRDi running 5.6L/100km @ 53000km. Fill up on Premium Diesel from Caltex/BP. Urban driving avg 50km/h.

I picked this car for his fuel efficiency. Petrol prices don't change much here unlike Sydney, so avoided unleaded engine all together.

2015 Outback 2.5A, car says 7.7, 'Fillup' fuel app says 8.03l/100, 36m average

  • Jeep Wrangler 3.8L V6 roughly between 14-16L/100km in urban and 12-14L/100km on highways.
I get this happy feeling every time I see my car so fuel consumption doesn't bother me.

  • 2014 Toyota Aurion Odometer 50,000km. Average 8.5L/100km. Never gone over 9L/100km on a whole tank even in heavy traffic.

  • 2018 Pajero Sport with mods, highway is usually 10L/100km, around town 12-13L/100km.

Prior to that, I had a V6 petrol 4WD, and a string of V6 petrol sedans. I also have a V8 Commodore as a weekend toy. Should be apparent that fuel consumption doesn't rank as a huge factor for me. I'm more concerned with reliability and how they are to drive. I'd have a Y62 Patrol in my driveway instead of the Pajero Sport if I could, but at nearly twice the price, it's not going to happen any time soon.

  • Currently averaging around 4.9L per 100km, pretty much all city driving. Best I get seems to be a drive to work in weather that doesn't require aircon (3.5L per 100km). Car is a Honda Insight 1.3L mild hybrid with 253000km.

My old car does around 6.2L per 100km average around the city and 5.8L on road trips. (Toyota Echo).

Don't really understand the appeal of larger engines for city driving personally but I guess the annual cost of fuel is not hugely significant right now
