Indoor Fireplace - New Home

Hi everyone,

Looking for recommendations based on experience for indoor fireplaces (gas vs electric).

I am building a new house and will be asking the builder to leave an area for the fireplace, so hoping to have one picked soon so I am aware of how much space to leave.

Main intention of the fireplace will be for ambiance/coziness and not necessarily to warm the space.

Any recommendations are much appreciated.

So bung in a TV with a HD fireplace loop?

Then in the warmer months, instant fish-tank!

We have a Gas one but keep in mind you will only use it when it is cold as once its on it emmits heat so there is no just having it on for looks. You put it on when you want the room warm.

  • Therage makes a good point, if it's going to be something of a showpiece you might like to see it "burning" all year round. Maybe you should buy one of those fake fireplaces looks like it is always burning and that doesn't put out heat unless you turn the knob, then it burns gas behind the scenes and starts blowing out actual heat. I swear I've seen fake fires that look fairly convincing. Maybe at the theater.

  • Get a suspsended fireplace, in the right house they look so on-trend !

  • Agree with Therage 100%

A built in electric or gas fire isn’t the same ambiance as a wood fire. So to achieve this they use fake logs etc to give this effect.

So why go to bother of building it in, you can achieve same result without the expense. Plus you can move it should your layout needs change,

So using a flush mount unit, which gives variable heat control. That being you can set temp to be same as your room temp, meaning it will display without heating (you can use cheaper airconditioning, to heat the room) gives you flexibility and you don’t have the expense of building it in.

See this as an example. Which isn’t a recommendation of unit or supplier, it’s just to illustrate the concept.

  • Check impact of wood burning on health. Why you would pay for something to reduce it is beyond me.

  • Thank you all for your feedback
Has given me some food for thought
