Who Are Those People Who Drive Slowly in Single Lane Highways and Then Speed up When You Get to Overtaking Lanes?

Seriously, just did a bit of a trip over Christmas, and noticed this so frequently on the country roads.

It would be a single lane road, and you'd get people (in all sorts of cars) driving at changing speeds (going from 100km/h down to 70km/h) with no rhyme or reason, then as soon as you get to an overtaking lane - BAM, they're pumping 110km/h for the whole thing. When it ends, they're back to their usual random speed.

It drives me mental.

I always thought that the considerate thing to do is to realise that if someone catches up behind your car - the logical conclusions is that you're going slower than them on average, so the polite and considerate thing to do is to allow them to pass as early as possible.

Does no one else feel this way?

    • You will have to rather blame the absolute idiot operating the cruise control. It's not as if the cruise control will have to magically know to add another 40KPH of speed out of the blue; in fact, it might not be a safe thing for the cruise control to do that.

  • Those are absolutely the worst drivers on the road. All of my fines are trying to overtake these idiots. It downright pjsses me off

They are annoying, but they (likely) haven't been fined for their actions.
You apparently have been fined (I assume for speeding?) for your driving decisions and actions. Unless there was an emergency, you didn't need to exceed the speed limit to overtake them.

      • That is the big problem…they get away with being a much more dangerous driver (slow drivers get in the way/affect a lot more drivers than fast ones) and these ones who try to do the right thing by overtaking a bad (unpredictable, inconfident, unfocussed) driver get fined by police…and only because the other guy wouldnt let you pass.
Both drivers are acting illegal, but why is only one of them getting punished?

Driving a little under the speed limit can be frustrating for other drivers - but it is not illegal.

          Speeding is.

"you didn't need to exceed the speed limit to overtake them."

by far one of the dumbest comments in all of ozbb history, maybe ever

        • Agreed…just got back from a trip to the country and there were so many slow drivers that were too scared to overtake so others had to overtake 2 sometimes 3 vehicles at a time. Get off the road I say!!

  • Bunch of annoying ppl

Just let them drive their way, and drive safe as you can.
You're right, but not everyone is doing right.
And to be honest, the time difference is not that much.

    • Why don't people get this?

This is why I think you need to punch the kid in the playground who gets to the top of the slide and just sits there, blocking it up for everyone else who’s waiting to go down the slide. They get off on making everyone wait for them. They think they’re the king of the castle and they grow up to be these infuriating adults who drive super slow until they’re being overtaken. If we get ‘em while they’re kids, we can put and end to their selfishness now and society will be a better place.

Rubbish. It’s all in YOUR head.

  • Yeah and what's the deal with airline food? Am I right?

It's always someone else's driving and always other people who drive you mental. Guess what. Half of the people on the road are below average drivers. What's more most of those people over-estimate their abilities precisely because they don't know how to drive well and so don't know what is required. You might even be one of those people and not know.

The nature of the road is that you must always drive defensively and that YOU are in control of how you react to it. Driving while agitated/upset/enraged is not going to improve your driving. Calm down, allow extra time, and be prepared to do your best to avoid all manner of discourteous, stupid and dangerous behaviour.

Overtake them and then brake check them a few times… they'll usually back off completely and you won't have to worry about them trying to overtake you anymore.

  • Probably the same drivers that don't know how to zip merge, and the same drivers that change lanes at the lights to get pole position and then take off slower than a truck, and the same drivers that flash you when you're doing a safe lane change in front of them but they decide to go over the speed limit to try and close the gap, and the same drivers that don't move forward just that extra 30cm so you can reach a turning lane, and the same drivers that fill up their unleaded car in the one diesel spot when the rest of the bowsers are empty, and the same drivers that open their door into yours in a car park and don't leave a note, and the same drivers that stop in no standing zones because it's just for a minute… I could go on

  • These are the very same idiots who drive 60KM, no matter what, through most town roads. That = 10km speeding in the 50km zone AND 10km slower than the stated 70km on the other roads.

It drives me mental. Same as the car at the LONG light intersection who sits for the entire 5 mins of waiting for the light, to choose THAT moment to turn to speak to their passenger. 5 cars (who won't beep) get through and it's red again! Gripe: intersections which don't allow enough time for all traffic to clear as well as too short a right-turn-lane (gets blocked by str8 traffic!). How about changing them more often?

    • Was your new year's resolution to raise as many necro threads as possible?
What is the point of doing this?
Are you trying to get people all wound up over things that they have managed to wind down from since they posted a year ago (or more in the case of the other thread you raised from the dead)?
