Taking a Car from Victoria to NSW

Hi all

What do I need to be aware of in terms of taking a Victorian registered car to NSW? Its been gifted to me by family and still registered & insured by family member. I'm listed as a driver under insurance.

I'm looking to understand transfer of ownership, change of plates etc in the most cost effective way.

And get a receipt from the family member saying that they sold you the vehicle and put on it a lower value. If you put on it "free/gift/$0", the RMS will charge you stamp duty based on "market value".

If they are giving the car to you, then you have 14 days to make the transfer. If they are just "loaning" the car to you on a "permanent" basis, then it can only be garaged in NSW for 3 months if it is going to stay here longer than that.

    • Probably the most relevant part of pegaxs useful info is to consider the roadworthy inspection.
This will require a “blue slip” which is a more thorough inspection, and can fail over things like oil leaks that might be overlooked on a less comprehensive inspection. So especially if this gift is an older car, don’t assume it will be straightforward to register in NSW.

    Be careful of vandalism.

  • If you are going to live in NSW, then consider updating the car insurance details to where you will garage it. Premiums will be different.

If you keep your car in Vic plate, there could be issues with CTP. That I'm not sure if details.

You should be aware of annual eSafety checks when renewing Regos once transferred to NSW plate.

Demerit points apply regardless whether you hold NSW or VIC driver licence.

  • After you surrender the vic plates to the rms in NSW send a copy of the receipt to VicRoads

  • Thanks all. The insurance and blue slip will be easily organised.

Just not sure on where/how the stamp duty comes into it i.e. should I pay in Vic or NSW?

From Service NSW: To receive a NSW stamp duty exemption, you'll need to provide evidence of proof of stamp duty payment on the vehicle in another jurisdiction.
