What Is This Ant?

Hi, another identification post :O

I'm seeing quiet few number of those ants around my house. Not sure what kind of ant is and if its harmful to the house or not. As my eyes are not sharp, not sure if this could be carpenter ant or just a garden ant. If its a carpenter ant, I would be calling pest control to get rid of those. Any help would be appreciated.

    banana for scale?

    • The length of the ant is approximately 8mm. Estimation is from the hinge next to the ant in the original photo. (which is not shown on the attached photos)

    Be careful

Don't go close to him. It's a crocodile

  • What are they eating? We had some that weren't going for sugar baits and ended up getting rid of them with Amdro which is super expensive but fat/protein based and was effective.

I'd try a sugar based bait like ant rid first, if they don't go for that start looking into other options.

    • They were mostly by the lime tree. See few of them by the vegi garden. And now they are sneaking around the worm farm.

If they are near the lime tree they might be enjoying the sap from scale or mealy bugs. In that case you’re best of dealing with those, rather than the ants. If the ants are outdoors and not causing a problem I wouldn’t worry about them.

        • Thanks for the tip. We recently had mealy bug outbreak. We had to get rid of a lot of flowers to get rid of those. Now we only see few in a week. I will see how I go :D

        • We had this problem with our lemon tree. White oil was effective.

  • These are a PITA when they like your house as they don't eat it, but search out the kitchen for sweet stuff. I watching for ants in the kitchen and then get the ant rid out.

They are only a PITA if you've got ants in your pants. Or maybe if you sleep naked.

Vinegar spray gets rid of them in the kitchen. Don't exterminate them - ants like termites.

    • I won't bother them if they do no harm to the house :D

  • I'm not going to lie, I want more pictures to aid in identification! Need some of those macro shots!

  • Looks like a $400 Noma Degustation dish.

  • Black ant. So you rather spend a few hundred dollars than try "natural" remedies. Doesn't sound like much of one with nature.
