Montague Urban Folding Bicycle - Shimano 21 Speed Drivetrain $1,499 @ Velomania

24

The Urban is a folding bike with standard 700c wheels that delivers road performance on a budget. A 21-speed Shimano drivetrain provides ample gearing for hilly roads while wide 35mm tires cushion the ride over rough terrain and potholes.

The patented RackStand offers cargo carrying capacity and has a built in fender, acts as a kickstand, and serves as a stand for the folded bike.

    Nice rack…

    RRP?

    • +4

Website doesn't mention anything about a discount, looks like this actually is the RRP?

    • I don't see any issue. Plenty of rrp deals on ozb these days

      • Yeah because those items are hard to find in stock such as the PS5.

        • so the definition of a bargain is something hard to find?

  • Just realized it’s on US$750 in the US. See Montague Bikes US website. Seems expensive, given that information. I would be asking for a discount.

A base-level Ford mustang costs $26K USD in the US and $56K in Australia. I know I am not comparing apples to apple but they point remains.

We don't have a luxury bicycle tax in Australia though… (yet)

The LCT currently starts at $68,740 (inc GST) so not relevant in this example.

yeah thats a very entry level shimano drivetrain. I looked at these years ago, they were taken over to iraq for army use and rusted to shit.

1.5K for acera/altus drivetrain and shitty oem wheels and components…
    wheres the bargain?

    • I just paid $2k for a full suspension bike with decent components on bikesonline. I don't know why you even consider paying $1500 for this.

This bike may be too big to be useful as a folding bike, and compromised as a regular bike because it folds… Do some research online and be clear on what your needs are for a folding bike!

    • Yeah, doesn't look like this is your classic "Can take on a train and quickly fold it up for the ride" type bike. Looks like you need to fully remove the front wheel.

Only use case I can see is for people who live in a tiny apartment with literally no-where to store a bike.

Why is this a bargain ?

Their previous price was $100 cheaper…

Agree, not a bargain per JV’s research

I had this bike for 4 years that I rode around in London/Berlin. For ref, I bought the 2015 model for around 400 GBP (approx 800 AUD) during a sale.
Looks like they've made a few improvements to it since.

They didn't have rackstand & fender/kickstand in the 2015 model.

The biggest issue I've had with the bike was that the seat post after a few years wouldn't stand in its place and sunk in very gradually if you hit a bump.
I had to readjust the seat post before almost every trip.
I took it to all sorts of bike shops to try and get it fixed.
I even liaised with Montague who were quite communicative but we couldn't resolve the issue.

Other than that, I did really love the bike and I definitely got my money's worth from the bike as I rode it daily for 4 years.
Many curious onlookers would often ask me about the bike and its history.

There a pros/cons to a full sized bike that folds up.
Me personally, I couldn't go to a smaller foldup bike after a Montague but in Australia I might reconsider as cycling conditions are different

    Pros :
    1) It's a fold up bike meaning you can take it to a train and not get disapproving looks
    2) It's a fold up bike. Handy if you're too pissed to ride and need to get a taxi home. It fits in the boot of most cars
    3) If space is an issue in your flat, you can fold it and store it if you wish
    4) Ride likes a normal bike, no compromises there

    Cons:
    1) Bigger than a normal folding bike. More cumbersome to fold/carry in comparison but you get used to it quickly. I could fold it in about a minute or under.
    2) More folding parts mean perhaps some of the parts won't last. e.g. Seat Post mentioned above.
    3) Although it uses standard parts (Shimano Gears etc), there are some parts that might be proprietary to Montague. Like the seatpost

I wouldn't have an issue getting a montague as a 2nd bike, but perhaps not at the $1500 mark. Around the $1000 mark perhaps.
    After all, we're Ozbargainers …

This a very low-spec bike. A non-folding equivalent would be a few hundred dollars.

You could buy a far-better road bike, plus a similar-grade 20" folding bike, for the same money.

    • Spot on..

by ur logic, airpod max deals deserve a neg

      • +2

No, that's not how analogies work, and yours is not even a good one that I can see. (can you elaborate?)

I've ridden a few folding bikes, in all sorts of conditions.
Off-road you really notice the difference between 20" and big wheels, but on-road, it is surprisingly similar. (wheel-base aside)
This is a bargain site, and I'm talking about value for money. Look at 20" if you need folding.

It is a bit vague on the specs. Is that a freewheel or a cassette?

        • People often comment on airpod max deals that you can buy better quality for less. basically that's ur gist am i wrong? But a neg deal would be revoked by community votes

          • @belongsinforums: Headphones are like wine - very subjective.
And are airpods not as much about software and the Apple ecosystem? I understand there is functional difference.

I will admit, looking around just now, that bike prices remain crazy generally. but still …

            ("ur" RU12?)

            • @bargaino: Airpod max are 900. Top brands like bose are 400 for the same class of headphone.

              • @belongsinforums: I have no argument with you on the headphones. I use SoundPeats :)

                • @bargaino: its not about the headphones. its about the rrp or near rrp deals. anyway doesnt matter

  • Low quality components for price; known issues with the brand. Yes it's folding but not a bargain at all.
