For Those Who Pre-Ordered a PS5 a Day after Pre-Order Release at EB Games

Hi OzBargainers,

On the 18th September (about a day after pre-order announcements were released) I was able to secure a pre-order for a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition from EB Games and paid $50.

When I received my receipt/tax invoice, I was shocked to see that the estimated release was for 31st December 2021. I went in-store to ask about this and they basically gave the excuse that it's a placeholder and that they only put it to that date to make sure that they were not delivering promises they could not keep.

No hate at all to the retail store workers, I love them and understand that they are just following the higher-ups directives.

Was just wondering if anyone else is having a similar experience with the PS5 pre-order process at EB, and if anyone has received their unit yet.

Just seeing people able to snag these PS5's at flash sales early in the morning piqued my interest again and so wanted to drum up some conversation about it. Otherwise am pretty patient waiting until it comes.

This is a very common tactic for pre-orders with no specified date to list 31st Dec. It's perfectly normal.

I would suggest you try to snag one from the current stock drops and cancel EB Games if you can.

    • Yeah mate, just wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were. I've personally never pre-ordered anything before this (last console I've ever owned was a PlayStation 2).

      • Try to get one from other sources if you can else you may be waiting a while. Also strongly suggest reconsidering and getting the disc edition.

The small 'saving' for the digital edition is very quickly eroded when you consider PS Store pricing is ridiculously expensive vs buying discs from Amazon/JB Hifi etc.

        • Would I be able to rescind and refund that $50 for the pre-order fee from EB should I receive another unit from another store? And thanks mate, have been reading a lot about the differences in Disc and Digital and yeah if I am able to I will get a a Disc edition instead.

@tacos4brekkie: I'm pretty sure you can cancel pre-orders and get deposit back with no problem, worth checking with local store. Obviously do not do this until you have a PS5 box in your hands. Definitely get disc edition, there's no difference beyond the added disc functionality and subjectively less appealing bulge. Still worth it and you can play majority digital games on it too if you wish. Just opens up more choices in getting cheap PS4 and PS5 discs as well as the occasional BluRay once in a blue moon.

      • just wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were

As soon as I saw that date I'd have cancelled it. Then again I never buy something when they first come out, let them sort out the bugs first with 50 service packs
You may actually not get one until then and its all kosher and you cant complain. Chances are you will…

but I see some stores are listed today as having them in stock, and you still have a promise and nothing more.

That's a common practice at retailers, to set a date fairly far in the future as a placeholder. This avoids disappointment to the consumer by it continually be extended, especially if they don't know when they're expecting more stock.

Plus, it always looks better to under-promise and over deliver.

Wait and you still don't have it? I'd be livid. People who ordered this morning from Amazon/BigW have delivery tomorrow

    • EB is sucking major butt right now. I've been a pretty loyal customer over the years and stacking up my EB World Points but yeah; they've really let me down this time around.

  • I got the EB Games second batch pre-orders with 31 December 2020 'placeholder'. Actual stock came two weeks after launch, so about 26 November.

Unfortunately that won't help you with guessing when yours will arrive, but I would expect in the next month or two given the current stock situation.

To my knowledge, all of EB's pre orders stated when you'd receive it.

    Pre-order 1: Day of release
    Pre-order 2: By the end of 2020
Pre-order 3: By the end of March 2021

I was in in the number 2 category and got it late November.

    • Yeah and I don’t understand why everyone’s complaining when EB informed everyone what shipment they’re on lol

  • I pre-ordered similar to you for the 2021 shipment with the same estimated date of 2021 (disk version).

I picked up my unit in early December.

EDIT: I also traded in my PS4 pro under the promotion and paid the balance something like $200 in November but not sure if this made any impact. Edit 2021 shipment picked up on Nov 28th.

I preordered "17th Sep 2020 (8:07PM)" and it shows December 31 for me too. Yet BigW are selling disc consoles to strangers online…

I went in-store to JB on Friday 15 January 2021 and preordered the $749 Disc PS5 and I picked it up Wednesday 20 January 2021.

I feel really bad for you OP if you have waited since 18 September 2020.

    • Damn. That's a big blow to me. I will try and look around in-store at JB as well. Thanks for letting me know.

  • We are still months away from shelf sitting PS5s. Sony will be over 15million units sold by Christmas so they are pumping them out.

Never pre-order ANYTHING from EB Games.

    • This. I learnt the hard way when I preordered the best collector's edition copy of Crysis 2 a very long time before it was released. When the release date drew near, they swapped me to a crappy standard copy. The game also sucked hard. The game was also PC which couldn't be returned.

I pre-ordered both the XSX and PS5 from EB, got them both in November (2nd round releases)

    • I hope you don't! Saves more allocation for EVERYONE ELSE :-)

  • I preordered from another store after you and received it at launch and have been playing it since. The only benefit of buying it from EB is the ability to trade in your old consoles/games. Still, I'd be pissed to have been waiting that long and still heard nothing back.

  • Same tactic with the upcoming Lego Star Wars game. Doubt it's coming out 31/12/2021 but as the publisher hasn't given retailers a date other than "2021" they have to err on the side of caution.
