Harris Farm Discounted Salmon

Guys this is really bizarre story. I've got 2 kg delivery of the smoked salmon from this deal:

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/598761

BB date on a small sticker is 28/01/21. I've removed the sticker and under the sticker is original BB date which is 14/10/21 (printed on the package). I am completely confused why would HF replace the original date with the new and short one?

Moreover when I eat this salmon I feel vomitting a little bit. What should I do? Money wise it is not big deal - only 42$ with delivery so I don't want to bother. However this is really bad practice from retailer to not mention BB date on the web page.

  • I've never liked Denmark smoked salmon.

Are you working for Harris Farm?

Then you should be able to explain why Harris Farm sells this product online without single warning that BB date is only week away. Or should I guess BB date by the product price? More of that - why would HF replace original manufacturer date with their own? There are too many questions which I want to bring for others' attention and it is not your decision of what and why should I do on the public forum.

    • Username seems more than appropriate.

Honestly i'm pretty wary of seafood on the best of days let alone getting it delivered.
Stick to local salmon and you should be right.

Although they might have had an oversupply of one days packaging so they just relabelled it, not necessarily just blowing out the use by date

Is this post in revenge of HF not cancelling your order when asked?

Smoked salmon has a shelf life of one to two weeks. Clearly the sticker is there to provide the correct expiry date and is not part of some way to fleece customers.

Beyond the above, it would appear that you've bought a product that is reasonably within normal parameters (it's not like the stuff has a three year shelf life and they're flogging you stuff with a week to go). That doesn't rule out spoilage for several other reasons, but the base parameters you've supplied are not suggestive of "foul play".

Bin the salmon. Take it back to your store of purchase/call head office if you want to try your luck at a refund/goodwill payment, but that's about it.

Talk to Harris Farm. Their online folk are really great with returns.

Why do people sk here first rather than contacting the people that can fix the problem?

  • It sounds like they took it out of freezer and put a shorter expiry on it. Not really nefarious.
