What do you think will happen?

Edit: for those that said VPN. VPN aren't free, and the links that Google redirects to will be under the VPN bandwidth, is it not?

  • Your Google Minis and Google Home will become bricks?

Luckily I invested in Alexa too

  • This whole thing is a joke which only benefits the 'big news'

A good summary of why it is anti competitive to all the small players is explained here. https://arichlife.com.au/news-media-bargaining-code-will-hur…

Amusingly, you probably wouldnt find this result on google search if the code is passed, and would instead get newscorp/guardians article on how the code was great.

    • The noise at Microsoft afterwards…..BING

Google News Showcase launches in Australia
    https://blog.google/products/news/google-news-showcase-launc…

Their solution is a service you sign up to to receive the news which also pays the news outlets

This is the way to go rather than forcing everyone to be part of the revenue, only the ones using this will be a pay per click.
I hope they set up a good system to catch people like newscorpse who will no doubtfully abuse the system

As this early version of News Showcase rolls out, the partnerships will provide financial support for some of the country’s most respected independent, local and regional publications including The Canberra Times, The Illawarra Mercury, The Saturday Paper, Crikey, The New Daily, InDaily and The Conversation.

Just some of the guys who would be crushed if the newscorps 'code' gets passed

      Exactly
A filter for your news is what we need
Ill be using it just to filter the real news from the propaganda newscorpse are feeding the sheeple

Real journalists reporting the real news (facts) NOT some games show host feeding you fictitious dribble from sponsors or a certain political party

I remember a few years ago, one of the regular journalists from new.com.au, used his privilege to spread the news why he hasn't bought a house yet because he was waiting for the apocalypse in the property market where the price would drop by 30%, like in the overseas market. It sure was a good way to scare people off indicating our economy was about to take a drastic action south.

Imagine if people started to believe in it and went into a panic mode, I wonder who'd benefit from it. Suddenly we'll have a new meaning of, 'the need of a few outweighs the need of many'. Haven't heard him ever mentioning it again since.

Who gives a @#$& if they leave! As far as I am concerned it is all muscle flexing. Will they ‘leave’? Maybe, maybe not,but I would say highly unlikely.Plenty of other search engines around. Not the end of the world as we know it folks.

It looks like Google has already struck deals with ABC, The Guardian, Seven West Media and Nine/Fairfax, where Google will pay those news publishers money to have the content on News Showcase. However the Nine/Fairfax deal was only $30 million annually for 5 years, much less than the $600 million per year from Google & Facebook Nine has quoted last year.

I guess Google is now not leaving, and is just waiting for News Ltd to come up with a deal?

Interestingly, the Treasurer is quick to pad on the government's own shoulder and calling the deal "a historic moment". Didn't Google already proposed News Showcase all the way back in 2019, before the government stepped in last year and forced in a very one-sided News Bargaining Code?

Google Strikes Deal With NewsCorpse and facebook gives it a flick by not providing news links on its platform to Australia
Well done to facebook for standing up to this corrupt government being controlled by rupert

Now everyone can line up and ask for money because they provide links?

  • And the Newscorpse has listed a whopping 30 billion (of course not 30 million as it was reported by everyone else, typing error? how about pigs can fly) Google deal with the other media company while trying to downplay FB for refusing to be a part of something that they're not making money from. Who owns the Newscorpse again?

LOL, 30 billion with channel 9? should have gone all the way and put 30 trillion and make readers think Google is running scared.

Pity for the small independents like the Guardians than the big pushers.
Have I compromised OzBargain now for linking the news, will OzBargain becomes the next target?
