Roof Racks for Luggage

Hi All

Looking to plan a trip and our car won’t fit what we need to take. I’ve seen roof pods and roof luggage racks. What do people recommend and why?

I’ve got a Kia Sportage 2018 model. Is it just as simple strapping your suitcase to the roof in a luggage tray?

Sorry this is all foreign to me so looking for guidance!

Roof pods are more aerodynamic (less wind noise while moving at speed) and will protect your belongings if it rains. They are also lockable but not necessarily high security.

You can fit a lot more on a carefully packed roof basket but that's about the only positive.

    • Can you fit a suitcase in a roof pod??

how big is the suitcase? how big is the pod?

          • @bemybubble: As M S Paint says.

Other thing to bear in mind is that you have to lift the item from ground level into the pod (or basket). Some people find that easy. Some find it impossible, for many different reasons.

The pods and baskets fit to the cross rails that run from side to side, not the ones that run from front to back. Do you already have these cross rails?

I'm a fan of the pod personally.

            • @oscargamer: Don’t have rails yet. Next question is recommendation for pod and rails 😀

  • Anyone else looking for something similar?

There is another option of a canvas roof bag.
I’m not a fan of any of the roof options, as they are a pain to pack and unpack. For some vehicles the cost of racks and pods is also exorbitant.

Best option is to take less stuff!

  • Luckily it's not that RAV4 and a kayak.
