Amazon's free app a day site, working for anyone???

Hi,

just wondering if anyone can get the free app.?
I've been having trouble the last couple of days, it comes up with an time out error when it tries to do purchase authorisation.

I've tried making a new account with US details and same thing happens.

Hence wondering if other people is having the same problem, maybe amazon is using a different way to dectect if you are US resident?

If so anyone know a way to get around it?

  • I got an 'app not compatible with your device' message the other day, but that is different to your problems. Other than that, signed in and downloaded a previously purchased app just fine.

    note: I haven't accepted the latest amazon store update

  • Fine for me using the fake US Account details method (I just "bought" today's free app to double check).
    I have been updating the Amazon App when it requests to do so as well, currently running release-2.1.0 and it reports no updates found.

    I have the same problem. Tapping on get app will take me to the my apps list. It would say purchase started and then user authenticated over and over again, before timing out and stopping. Noticed it on the 17th, so haven't been able to get the free apps since. I'm on the latest release 2.1.0.

    Could it be amazon somehow managing to figure out the fake US addresses or something?

    Edit: Just tried on my tablet as well, same thing happens.

    But downloading and installing my existing apps still work, so I would assume updating installed apps should as well, though until an app updates I won't be able to confirm.

  • Works for me. But lately, whenever I use an app I 'bought' from Amazon - eg the Enhanced Email, Docs to Go app, I get this popup about Amazon appstore having troubles connecting, then it closes the app, then works again without the popup. wth

  • I'm having similar issues. As I try to download the free app it skips between "Purchase Started" & "User Authenticated".

  • I just tried clearing cache and data and that didn't seem to work. Updating apps seems to work at this stage (as in it starts the download).

  • Yup having similar problem starting from yesterday :(
    Can't seem to connect. Basically it switches between Autheticating and Downloading!

  • same here… when i tried it from the app store website i got the "app not available in your geographical location" even when i have the US address listed … so yeah looks like they figured out how to block external IP's

    It seems that they have enabled some location detection - I got around it by installing orbot from the market (it is the official tor client for android - search tor for more info but I think it is a good tool):

    basically I followed this guide but used it for the amazon app store

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099273

    a change I made was to set orbot to only work for the amazon app store (since I dont want it working for all my Internet traffic), I also set it not to start on boot. My phone is rooted but it may work for unrooted phones - if not this is one of many good reasons to root - just be careful you dont brick your phone :)

    Now if I want to get the free app I launch orbot then browse the app store as per normal and make the purchase. Note that the tor network is slow because it is routing your traffic through many computers all over the world so I made the purchase whilst running orbot, then when the download starts I turn off orbot and complete the download as I would normally before amazon implemented this new "feature".

    It is a little bit of a work around to get a free app but occasionally the free app is worth the download (eg. I just updated cut the rope). I hope this helps

    • cheers for that

      did u enter the exit nodes as written in the xda thread or just left it blank?

      • I wrote them in like in the thread and got it to work.

    • well give it a try, thanks bigwoof!

    • Thanks for the link, hopefully it works =)

    • Nice bit of research you got there. Cheers mate.

  • anyway to get around it without rooting and using orbot? anyone has any idea?

  • Has anyone found a solution yet?
    I also heard its available in Australia now…

  • I used a ip hiding program, go to amazon app store to get the app, then go to the phone/tablet to download it. seems to work for me.

    • can you be more specific?

      • I used easy hide ip to access amazon via the computer and added the app to my app library,
        then I went to the amazon appstore via my phone and downloaded the app.

    Found a way to get amazon free apps without rooting:

    Assuming you already have amazon account, which stopped working a few weeks ago

    1. download Orbot search from market;
    2. download firefox beta from market;
    3. configure orbot by adding "{us}" in exit node;
    4. get the proxy mobile extension for firefox;
    5. turn on orbot and test it with firefox (it will not work with your other internet browser), it should say "Congratulations……"
    6. go to android app section of amazon website, you will notice free app there, just login and click "get app", it will say you have now purchased….
    7. go to your amazon app, the free app should be there.

    Enjoy ppl, back to collecting paid apps for me hehe

    • thx

    • First of all, thanks for the guide. How do you know if it work? How do you test them?

      • EDIT: Yay i manage to get it working…free apps baby =) thanks
