Which Powerbank to Charge My Dell XPS 15 9560 Laptop? (130W)

Hi Ozb,

Per the post below, I'm looking to get a new portable power bank to charge my Dell XPS 15 9560, because the current battery is really bad.

I just had a look at my charger, and it says its 130w

Can someone please share with me, what PowerBank specs I'd need to charge the Laptop to give me at least couple hours of battery?

Does it have to be a "PD" Power Bank?
How many additional hours would 20,000MaH get me?
Does Power Bank have to be 130W? If so, I can't find anything that high…highest I've found is this Kogan one (102w)

I'm just after what actual spec the PowerBank is so I can put one that will suit the Dell XPS. Btw, I've got a USB C port on my XPS with a small Lightning logo next to it.

Thanks

  • Instead of buying a PowerBank (ie an external battery), which don't you address the actual problem and replace the laptop battery.

  • +1

I have an XPS 9550 (same basic laptop just a gen older on cpu/gpu), which i charge over USB C on 60w chargers due to convenience. Keep in mind that a 60w usb C power bank won't be too useful whilst using the laptop, as the laptop usually charges at 130w, not 60w, so the drain from the laptop is often more than what it is receiving from the USB C charger. What I use the USB C charging for is to ensure my current battery will last longer, due to charging at a slow rate (plus i have it set to not charge more than 85%.

Replace your battery, I was able to get a genuine 84whr for about $90 from ebay for mine, The powerbank won't really help, as it will only be useful when the laptop is turned off, not for using whilst on.

EDIT: Just go for something like this. It takes about 10 mins to replace the battery. (Though if you have a 3 cell you will have to remove the harddrive bracket as well as that is where the bigger batteries fit).

    • Thats very helpful. Thankyou so much. I appreciate that.

Can I please trouble you with a couple more questions?

      Firstly:
      - unfortunately, mine is indeed the 3cell so I guess it's more work
      Secondly:
      - I currently don't use my laptop on battery as I WFH so I'm definitely in no rush to buy the battery. Do you recommend I buy it asap to avoid this specific battery not being developed anymore (discontinued/outdated model) or do you think it's better to wait 6-12 months so hopefully newer laptops come out and this battery drops in price?

      Thanks so much

      • I'd buy it now, and if you are mainly using it on charge, tell the bios not to charge it until it gets below 50%ish and only to charge it to say 85% so that you maximise the life of the new battery.

        • Thankyou for the above

    • Can you recommend any powerbanks that can charge a laptop while running?

      • Depends what laptop? A lot of laptops that charge via USBC only charge at 60w, so will have no issue with it, higher power draw laptops will have more issues, but it will depend on which laptop and what hardware and power requirements it has.
