Finding Japanese Beer

Hey guys!

I'm looking for japanese beer, but for a bit of unique purpose. I make gear knobs out of Japanese coffee cans, and I'm looking for a few specific Japanese cans.
I have a supplier for 135ml Asahi cans (which are 10/10 for what I want), but I'm looking for 330 (or similar size) cans of Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo beers. I can find the larger sized cans relatively easily, but finding these online is proving to be a bit tricky.

I'm on the Gold Coast, but happy to buy online / drive to Brisbane etc if anyone has any suggestions

Thanks!

I don’t know, but those tiny Asahi and Sapporo cans are adorable. Would be a weird item to stock here. 330 ml should be somewhere

Old Richmond Cellars sell a number of imported beers n such and ship Australia Wide. Usually order from them if I want Yebisu or Suntory Malt. You may be able to find some cans there but some are sold out like the 350ml Asahi, though they mainly sell in glass bottles.

As you say the larger Asahi 500ml and Sapporo 650ml cans are easy to find here. The Asahi 500ml are Made in Japan too which is good rather than being brewed under licence.

    • Yeah Old Richmond is where I get the 135ml Asahis from, it seems I'm just after some pretty specific types haha

Are you able to link some photos for the gear knobs you make.
Sounds pretty interesting and I'd like to see some please.

      Hey, www.kujogarage.com is my store.

I do need to update the pictures a bit, and annoyingly, even though I make them, neither of my cars run a threaded gear knob so I can't even use them myself hahah. I was running them in my last car which made it useful for testing

        Now I'm even more confused….
        This is a 'thing'?
        Cans as gear knobs

The world is indeed a strange place

          This is a 'thing'?

After reading this thread, I have walked away more confused and with more questions to answers I would never dream about!

I mean I work full time and only do this on the side, and I sell 2 or so a week. Some weeks I'll do heaps, some weeks I do none.
I've sent them worldwide so theres a market for them, I just like doing car related things and I'm a big fan of the Japanese car scene and this is a way I can contribute to it

Thanks for that. Very cool, good luck tracking down the cans!

Those look great! I'll have to consider getting one if I ever get a Japanese car.

        • Thanks man, appreciate it :)

They used to sell 350ml asahi cans at Dan Murphy, might be worth contacting them?

Fujimart at Southport Park (opposite TSS) sells J-Beer. Don't recall seeing the small cans, but speak to them they might be able to get some from their supplier.

    • Yeah I had a look there today and got some Beer but not quite what I wanted. Definitely on the right tracks though

Daiso has the BOSS Black Coffee's (personal fav) in 280mL cans. The bases are heavy, and the can is like double-walled making these the perfect for manual shifter nobs. You can also use Redbull (and those are pretty popular too) cans, those are skinny and long, just the right shape you're looking for.

In the Runcorn IGA, you can get the small Sapporo and Asahi cans. However, these are the non-alcohol versions. Still worth checking out. They also have Pocari Sweat, and various other cans. I had a mini collection of the 375mL Pokemon cans from there.

If you're interested in things like, look into Drift Charms, you can make them from popular keychains, happy meals, toys, and miscellaneous. Otherwise, you should into making Sticker Bombs… it actually looks fun to buy thousands of these and then sort them into batches depending on theme (eg 90's cartoons, Jap brands, 4WD crew, etc etc).

Maybe try the local Japanese restaurants? Had a look at my local, Muso Ramen and they have Asahi, but don't mention if it's cans or bottles.

If you're wanting Umeshu or Yuzushu like the classic Strong Zero Lemon cans then Just Liquour is excellent.

  • I never thought about gear knobs before

    • You could say I'm a knob enthusiast

Try contacting the Japanese shops in each state.
They might stock different stuff and could send it to you.

The ones I know of in Melbourne that I have used are:
    suzuran.com.au
    shop-vic.fujimart.com.au
    daiwafoodonline.com.au

hinoki.com.au (has a Japanese vending machine in the shop)
These are just the ones I’ve been to but there are plenty of others around.

  • Do you have the actual 330 cans? See the supplier details on cans, go to local small bottles shop, they will be able help you to order.
