Expensive Shipping Cost Overseas

Don't know if this is the right place to ask but I just wanted to understand a certain situation, this is not a rant or anything of the sort.

The question is, is the reason why shipping from overseas countries so expensive a result of covid or has it always been this expensive?.
The main reason why I am asking this question is because I was planning on buying some products from Japan but found that shipping cost makes the product no longer worth it.

Was shipping cheaper in the past or has it always been expensive?. Are shipping prices increasing because of COVID or is some other reason?.

  • Should also add, is it likely for shipping prices from overseas countries to become cheaper in the future or is this type of price expected for the long term?.

  • Japan is somewhat more expensive since they cheaper boat options from EMS were suspended during COVID. Not sure if it's STILL suspended.

For reference, a small box less than 7KG cost $130 to send to japan in November, similar box size and weight at same time was 14,000 Yen ($175) to Australia.

  • +2

Japan was always expensive before covid.. And now even moreso.

  • Japan post airmail is not running due to COVID. So small items must now go DHL or by sea.
The old price for something like a game cart was $8 post, now it is $30.
The Japan post site says they reintroduced some small packet services to Australia in December, but the sellers I emailed says they think it is still unavailable.

    • I think it's just letters that resumed, not parcels

  • Importing Masterpiece Transformers over the years, I've always picked ferry option. Even JP Post Eco was $$$.

  • Tried to buy something from Europe last week, was under 500gms (not drugs you lot! :) ) and DHL wanted $88 and it seems if you are outside of a capital city they slap on a $35 'remote access' fee.
