Sorry for the bad formatting, as I just copy and paste from pdf.

Are they normal rate for business? Sounds like rip off to me? Surely there are cheaper alternative out there? Though I do need site visit and 4g backup, as it's a big premises with a complicated setup, and Telstra seem to be the only company able to provide that.

Appreciate any suggestion. Thanks!

  • Is this "ripoff" posts night??

    • Is it? Didn't realise it? I'm just bored with lockdown here in Perth. Lol.. But I do know ozb community very good at smelling out rip off ;)

  • You probably won't need everything from your quote.

Message on HOLD (8 Messages- Menu/On HOLD/Afterhours/Holiday period etc) $51.70/m

3-line voice service: includes unlimited local, STD and Mobile Calls $180.00 (you could get a Telstra office phone plan for $55)

    • Without NEC system, would I be able to transfer calls to other lines?

I was told SIP is the only way to go with business NBN due to its flexibility. If not SIP system what would it be?

      • How many phones and lines do you need? SIP is more suitable for larger offices. I'm using Telstra Digital Office Technology (DOT) but I can't find it in their website now. A Panasonic IP Cordless System (KX-TGP600 AND KX-TPA60) came with the DOT which I can increase up to 7 handsets. All works on the base unit so I can transfer, intercom, joint call etc. Total cost with NBN (FTTN), backup 4G internet, 2 or 3 numbers (can't remember which), premium speed add-on and Telstra Smart Gateway Pro costs about $200 per month or so. $200 doesn't include the Panasonic system as the unit was paid off over the years and I managed to get additional handsets for free on Gumtree.

        • I need 3 lines that's all. Currently all on landlines with optus.

          • @Lancerx: 3 lines means 3 concurrent calls. How many physical phones (handsets) do you require? If number of phones required is low like 2-5, SIPS might be an overkill. Under my DOT package, I have 3 lines, 2 used for voice calls (so 2 concurrent calls) and 1 for fax. My monthly charges are:-

Unlimited Business Internet $100 per month (NBN FTTN)
Premium speed upgrade $15 per month
Business calling pack $25 per month x 2 (for unlimited international calls to selected countries and domestic calls)
Additional Voice Line $55 per month

            • @trex: you with Telstra?

              • @Lancerx: Not working with Telstra but my office phone and internet is with them. I have a small business account relationship manager that helped advise on my upgrade to NBN. You should check to see if your account qualifies for one.

I don't have any complaints or issue with their services. My only gripe is that their FTTN don't use PPPOE but IPOE. Our equipment don't support IPOE so I had to use their Smart Gateway Pro which freezes up once every few weeks or so. A replacement gateway sent by Telstra didn't help, still freezes up occassionally.

      • +1

As someone who works in Business telephony, this is an absolute rip off in my opinion. i personally would look at cloud based systems with 4g failover
typically you're looking at $35 per line with unlimited calls etc included. $250-300 per handset outright.

        • Love to hear your suggestion. Could you please PM me? thanks!

  • You are with telstra, its their job to rip you off, so the answer is yes.

    • I know that, but business support wise, they're usually still the best I guess.

  • The short answer is YES,

If you really wanna save up just go with cheapest NBN provider with highest mid tier plan for your property e.g. may be NBN 50 or NBN100
Telstra is obviously most ridiculously priced Internet.
Try other NBN providers they are way cheaper and can provide landline too.
Although perhaps a mobile instead of landline could be another cheaper option.

    • My dilemma is no one in Perth seems to have a rep who can visit and survey the business apart from Telstra it seems. It's complicated network setup, so I definitely can't just "hook" it up. Plus I'm changing from ADSL and landlines to NBN

  • Telstra is a basket case since covid. Heard the CEO on radio saying they are bring call centres back to Australia last week, this week they sack 1400 people lol.
I have a business account for phones etc but have used westnet, iiNet for over 14 years with no problems, have had NBN FTTH 100/40 here for near 5 years now.

  • Let me just add in. The bottom line is I need an ISP tech to come in to survey and install the nbn and phone systems, as it's a very complicated adsl internet and landlines setup from previous owner. I simply can't just unplug and plug in new NBN. To put in perspective, I have 3 types of businesses running in one premise (currently with multiple ISP), will be sharing a nbn connection.

So regardless how good the other ISP is, site visit is the one thing they just be able to provide. So far, only Telstra able to do that. For e.g Optus despite its reputation as big ISP, is completely useless. Any other ISP in Perth able to site visit as well as Telstra?

  • Say if I were to buy a modem/router myself. Which higher end grade one should I go for?

  • mate, how's your computer skills? I was able to muck around and build my own SIP system using raspbx on a pi, pretty much free and I can have pretty much any number of extension I want to, can even assign different outgoing number for each line if I want to. Currently paying only $1 per month for a local australian number.

Even if you're not a tech savvy, if you can managed to get internet up and running at your place then you'll have plenty of options to get some VoIP providers or VoIP tech company doing a set up for you, no need for Telstra rip off. All they need is an active internet and they'll get you some voip phone to go with.

    • I'm fairly low skilled in networking stuff. Don't think I'll mess around with own sip. I think I'll just wait for VoIP, though porting number across I heard could take up to 6 months. Bloody useless nbn. I'm sure VoIP voice quality is not that bad, that I can't live with too.

  • I was going through the same predicament, when we were looking for a new phone system with the NBN migration.

We were originally with Telstra and we were told by them that we had to migrate to the NBN because the whole area was moving to the NBN.

Telstra gave us a very similar deal to the above - and I thought it was a bit of a rip off.

After going through all the online deals, and many forums, I found a business only phone and internet provider called Telnetworks.

After calling them, they first sent a tech out (and not a SALES REP) and he did a full site survey. The tech guy really knew what he was talking about. There was also more cabling work we had to do, in our office, before fully migrating to the NBN - which was provided by them at no extra cost.

In a nutshell, We got a brand new 5 line phone system with 7 new handsets, voicemail, IVR setup and configuration and NBN Unlimited 100/40 with 4G backup for $299.00 per month all inclusive.

We did not have to pay for any setup costs or installations or for the additional wiring. All required equipment was provided free of cost.

With the deal we got free unlimited tech support for the phones and internet. They come out and fix anything if there is any faults in their hardware. They also installed a new modem/router device at no additional cost and configured everything to match our office network.

The internet & phones have been working flawlessly for over 6 months without any fault now.
