Recommend Me a Book Which You Loved, or Made an Impact on You

Hi,

I'm looking to get back into reading.

Weather it's Self Help or Fiction, i'm looking for you to recommend a book which you really enjoyed, or something which has made an impact on your life.

I'm hoping I'll get a few recommendations which multiple people recommend.

Thank you

      • Oh hey nice, it's a great book. Not too thick either - would recommend if you're trying to get back into reading. It's very funny.

…I can't tell if this means you've already read it or not though.

I would also like to recommend The Importance of Being Earnest. It's a play but very entertaining and silly as well.

This book was very fun for me to read:

Just two writers who go back and forth about the most mundane of topics, but it's very interesting. It's just like listening in on a conversation. I wouldn't say it changed my life or anything, but it made a pretty big impact on me for some reason.

Freakonomics is super easy and interesting

  • Everyone just listing books but omitting what impact if any I suspect not much they had on their lives.

  • The happiest refugee - Ahn Do
Tuesdays with Morrie - Mitch Albom

  • No more Mr. Nice guy

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

Looks like this is one of those threads where lots of people reply but the op never reads/responds to any of it.

    • he/she is too busy reading books

It would take me hours to reply to everyone.

It's taken me ages, just going through the pages! :D

  • 'A fine balance' Rohintin Mistry

    Really sad but beautiful

  • +1 for Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman - Good Omens

And just because I grew up in the '80s and spent lots of time in arcades and in front of games consoles and computers, and caught every single reference in the book, I absolutely loved Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

  • Narcissus and Goldmund.

  • Man search for meaning ….by viktor e franki ….

  • The Fifth Risk - Michael Lewis (NF)
In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction - Gabor Maté (NF)
    Foundation - Isaac Asimov (F)

Childhood's end by Arthur C Clarke.

    50 Shades of Grey

  • Lord of the Rings.

  • Ishmael by Daniel Quinn.

The book changed my world perspective, portraying the real human impact to the planet in a not-so-preachy way. The story unfolds gently but the message hits like a brick.

  • "Hard to be a God", a sci-fi book about the horror of human condition. It gives perspective on humanity which you cannot unsee, and a stark reminder of the benign nature of evil.

Here is the trailer of the film which really nails the atmosphere.

  • Yukio Mishima - The pavilion of the golden temple, George Orwell -1984+Animal farm

  • Endurance- Alfred Lansig
    The revenant- Michael punke

Both stories of survival against the odds, both will have you on the edge of your seat.

For sci-fi, can’t recommend reading Dune by Frank Herbert enough. The scope, ecological relevance and imbedded mysticism will propel you to finish the book quickly. But only if you can get pass the first 50 pages or so. Once you finish the book, there are a few Dune games which are very engaging and movie and TV series to look forward to. (Dune 2 was the father of all real time strategy game!)

For fantasy, I am a bit shocked no one mentioned The Belgariad series by David Eddings. The books are extremely easy to read and ultra enjoyable. Magic element and common sense made reading these books satisfyingly rewarding.

For financial advice, just keep on coming back to this site.

For spiritual growth, just don’t keep on coming back to this site.

    Cheers!
