Paid Gumtree Seller via Bank Transfer. Can I Reverse It?

I paid a gumtree seller via bank transfer. The seller didn't deliver, said she had refunded my payment but I have not got the money back. Seller hasn't replied yet to my question about the refund. What are my options? Can I ask the bank to cancel my bank transfer?

Edit: Not a huge sum. We are talking about $60 here.

Edit 2: Called the bank (it's NAB). They created transaction dispute for this transaction. Will see how it goes.

Yes you can try to reverse it, but 99.9% will fail as the seller is keeping it.

I hope it is a cheap lesson

Go to Google and type in "cancel bank transfer [bank name]" and see what their procedures are.

    "Member Since 09/09/2011"
    bit surprised at that
    .

    • Surprised that I use gumtree or that I ask how to deal with this situation?

      • +27

Surprised you fell for this scam considering how long a member of ozbargain you have been, where everyone on ozbargain always says when you deal with gumtree always do it in person and with cash.

        • +2

I don't think it was a deliberate scam (maybe not even scam at all). Scammers sell mobiles, play stations and other things of value but not aquatic shrimps $1 each.

            @picant:

but not aquatic shrimps $1 each

            thanks for making me chuckle

          • @picant: Why did you pay by bank transfer anyway as surely you'd have to pick up in person?

      • +1

Gumtree is for face to face cash only.

It's been posted here and just about every forum I know of.

It's also on the Gumtree website.

      Respect your elders.

  • +3

They can ask but the recipient needs to agree. Bank transfer is just like handing over cash.

    • +2

Thanks. The recipient agreed to refund in our gumtree conversation. But I get it, she has to agree when bank contacts her about the reverse.

      • Can't she just send a transfer back to you?
Edit, my bad, I didn't realise she already had. It depends what bank she's using, it might take overnight.

    Gumtree.
    Electronic Transfer.
    Promise of delivery.

    What could possibly go wrong?

    • +1

Well you need a product and it is only available from one seller in gumtree and not available anywhere else. The amount isn't big and seller has high rating. What would you do?

      • +7

        Go without.

Life goes on I'm sure without your $60 item

        • +4

$60 is something I can afford to lose without much regret. But is it wrong to ask if it's possible to get them back?

          • +3

@picant: Not wrong to ask. But I wouldn't hold my breath on getting the money back.

          • @picant:

Well you need a product and it is only available from one seller in gumtree and not available anywhere else.

            Need? Or want?

$60 is something I can afford to lose without much regret.

That's the one good part of this story.

But is it wrong to ask if it's possible to get them back?

No, of course not. You should attempt to get your money back while noting you "can afford to lose without much regret" and overlaying this with value of your time and angst.

Ultimately, banks don't get involved in he said, she said disputes between buyers and sellers. The bank is there to process transactions, not provide buyer/seller protection.

The first rule of Gumtree is cash and in person.

        • how would OP get cash back from the person?

          • @Stopback: Why would he need his cash back when he has walked away from the transaction with the item he wants in his HAND?

          • @Stopback: He would have only handed over cash AFTER getting the item when meeting up. He would not have needed to get cash back.

      • I guess you decided that you'd risk it and you lost
You can try calling your bank to reverse the transfer but it most likely won't work.
Probably best to stick to cash on pickup

        • That's exactly what I do if I can: shop local, cache and pickup. But sometimes this isn't an option and I risk it.

          • +1

@picant: I'd recommend PayPal (not Friends and Family or inbuilt Gumtree payment) if you really have to risk it, they're more biased to the buyer. But don't risk it unless you're willing to lose the cash. Still you're funding the scum which I really don't encourage.

      • Google and ebay with paypal. Gumtree cash only.

You can always find the product somewhere else in Australia or the world on ebay 99% of the time and they take paypal.

  • Edit: Not a huge sum. We are talking about $60 here.

and seller probably does this 10 times a week. wow……

Another sucker for the $1 aquatic shrimp scam shakes head

    • +2

      Haha, brilliant

  • How long as it been since she refunded you? If the transfer back to your account didn't go through osko, then it can take a few days, especially it was made on a weekend.

    • It's same bank so I assume it should be fast. She said she refunded on Feb 2nd. Today is Feb 5th.

      • In that case, she most likely has not.

Same bank would almost always be instant or with a couple of hours. It is with Commbank anyway. Can't say with others, but I'm going to assume its the same.

3 days would be too long with bank A to Bank B

        • Wrong, commbank to commbank first transfer now takes 24 hours.

But any other banks should take overnight assuming they are paid before 5pm (cutoffs may differ bank by bank).

  • Submit an ACORN report:

    https://www.cyber.gov.au/acsc/report

    • They're useless. Same thing happened to me (sadly, silly me) and I lodged a report. Never heard anything, just an auto generated acknowledgement email.

  • What did you buy?

    • a lot of aquatic shrimps $1 each

      • Neocaridina? If so that would have been an awesome price and too good to be true.

Just get a few they breed like crazy. Expect to pay around $10 each.

        • Caridina longirostris

  • Pretty much screwed. The only way would have been to Paypal on them as a good or service transaction - that suckers them two ways (first one is the upfront fee, second is that if they don't ship they lose the money too)

No. You cannot reverse or get a refund on a bank transfer. You've lost your money unfortunately.

  • -1

Just sit and wait… if it is returned, that all good and well, if not, the bank will take care of it.

  • The first rule of scamming is don't talk about getting scammed.

  • +2

It happened to me once on gumtree and I immediately contacted my bank (commonwealth) to reverse it. They created a dispute and they never got back to me despite my numerous follow-up contacts and nothing was ever reversed. I was initially told they can only reverse it if the other party agree to refund the amount. As if that's likely to happen! A lesson learnt in my case.
