So not really "For the first time" - (Published to celebrate 90th anniversary of Tintin in 2019) & dearer than a few other times…

    • +1

Yep end of 2019, which is when I bought it. But hasn't gone any closer since then.

  • +13

I wonder why they have stopped writing new books. I still remember laughing hysterically reading this books and warned by librarians. That was in early 90s.

    • +7

      Same with Asterix
      Same with lucky luke

      • +10

Actually Asterix is still being written! There are new writers and illustrators since the original author’s deaths, but personally I don’t find the new ones to be anywhere near as enjoyable.

        • +4

when Rene died asterix, iznogoud, lucky Luke etc the magic had died as well. The story Asterix and the Falling Sky and after are enjoyable but not amazing.

          • +2

@sardines: There's new Lucky Luke being made too. The Man Who Shot Lucky Luke, Kid Lucky, Lucky Luke Saddles Up etc

            • @tedprior: Be interesting to read these though spin-offs rarely are as good. I.e kid phantom… though will most likely read the first few - thank you!

    • Some of the illustrations haven't aged particularly well, and you can't easily update these stories for 2021.

      • +14

Some of the illustrations haven't aged particularly well,

Even better to get printed original stuff then, before cancel culture gets to them.
Time and again as things get released or re-released then get a lot of unwanted changes, whether it's some extra line of Maclunkey, snipped scenes of anything involving certain actors, oh-so-smart widescreen cropping, or hey just missing an entire episode.

        • +18

That particular image is from 'Tintin in the Congo' which is not included with this collection.
It is still sold separately for those who want the complete tintin set. It comes with a note about it being very much a work of its time and should be taken as such, rather than the content being censored.

I bought both in Jan 2019 for $203 delivered from booktopia.

          • @CountDuckula:

It comes with a note about it being very much a work of its time and should be taken as such, rather than the content being censored.

That's definitely much better than others at least. Still miss a key point though that this set is not "all" stories of Tin Tin.

What if you were hanging out for a nice looking complete series set for TV series or movies. Not just to be able to watch them all but in a nice big custom case they release it in. Oh too bad, should've bought them in mismatching DVD, BR, 4k BR, etc as they were created, because now any full box set will be butchered here and there because someone got offended, was too put off by 4:3 footage, or someone wanted to be a George Lucas.

      • -1

They could just make the lips smaller and less round. Means paying someone to do it for each drawing.

        • +5

Better to leave as is, with a warning note like Count Duckula describes. It is not just lips, it is the whole context of the story, character intelligence, architecture ("everyone lives in tents") etcetera. You'd have to change everything in the book. Changing historical art, as ugly as it can be, is dangerous. Like cancelling Gone with the Wind… Erasing the lesson that can be learned.

I remember reading that the author had actually never been to Africa, any country on the continent.

    • +7

      Tintin died with his author

    • +6

      Herge died.

    • +8

      The author died in 1983….

      • -3

And Ann M Martin stopped writing babysitters club, but new books still come out with her name on them.

        • Different estate, different rules.

        • How can her name appear if she's didn't write it?

          • +1

@ramboando: Ghost-writing? She's famous, the people writing the book want exposure?

          • @ramboando: The characters are based on her own life, particularly on her mother’s childhood journal. The series is owned by Scholastic.

Don’t ask me how I know that.

  • Tintin and Alph-Art

What is this? I thought I read and know all Tintin books

    • +2

It was the last volume that was unfinished following the death of the author Herge. I do find it strange that most collected editions sets do not include Tintin in the Congo but include Alph-Art instead.

    • +1

It's kind of the planning sketches the book would be written from, so it has narrative and ideas, but it's very different to a normal Tintin book that's been rendered to final illustrations

  • +1

“Cannibals; Pirates; Man Eater; Blue Jelly Fish……..”

  • +2

Cancel Culture has disappeared "TinTin in the Congo" from Herge's bibliography!?

  • +3

These are smaller in size, right? Not as like the originals ….

    • +3

well they aren't the compact editions (typically found in red or blue cover case), this yellow cover one is "normal" size (roughly full A4) if that makes sense…

  • Thundering Typhoons!!!

  • +1

I'd love to have the French version…

  • On back order..

  • had this on the wish list for a while, thanks.

  • +1

expired? Cheapest option now is $265

  • +2

maybe I have been unlucky to a degree, but every time I order book sets from Amazon they are not perfect in appearance. a scuff, a dent, a scratch.

they arrive packaged well, so something happened to them at the warehouse, not during delivery

    • It is not just you. I have had a similar experience with Amazon. I few years ago I ordered all 24 Tintin books (as separate books). I ordered about half from Amazon AU and half from the Book Depository depending on which was cheaper for each book. The books from the Book Depository all arrived in perfect condition. Many of the books from Amazon had a dent in the corner or edge. I should have just ordered them all from the Book Depository. The difference in price was only 1 or 2 dollars per book.

      • sounds like Amazon warehouse robots need a bit of tuning to handle books

probably makes sense for Amazon to encourage people to buy kindle versions instead since they cost nothing to store and handle

anyway fkk big corporations and Amazon in particular. bog brother, I am talking about you here. we'll read books we like whatever happens

  • Man, I want something like this but for Archie comics

  • +2

For the first time, you can own all 23 stories in The Adventures of Tintin …

i have 30 of tintin pdf including congo, alpha art, tintin the freelance reporter, myterious visitor, voice of the lagoon…… . so how many are really the complete all tintin ?

    • +2

There are 24 books by Herge although recent collections such as one posted here have "cancelled" Tintin in the Congo from the collection but you can still buy it separately. There is another one from the same publisher that was not created by Herge: "Tintin and the Lake of Sharks". It has been adapted from one of the Tintin animated films. The others are "unofficial" usually made by fans.

      • i have the lake sharks too.
hmm probably thats it i got them all…

    • It looks like that all after the Alph-Art have not been done by Herge, but by others using the characters.

  • +4

Also available at Booktopia for $199.95 + Delivery. I have a Booktopia Commbank cashback which would make this a similar deal.

  • Why is paperback more expensive than hardcover (The Tintin Collection (Compact Editions) Hardcover – 1 April 2015)?

    • +2

The compact hardcover is much smaller in page size so the pictures have been cut and moved to fit it. Paperback is much more true to the originals in size and is what most people remember.
So I'm guessing the paperback has more demand to it making the price higher.

    • +2

The compact editions are for ants. They're priced well, and are nice collected editions but it's like having a postcard of a Renoir. Kinda fine, but not what the artist intended.

  • I remember watching one of the first, if not first episodes

A Chinese person called BungeeCracky or something to that effect….

They really had no idea back then LMAO.

  • Personally not keen on the paperback versions of Tintin. Gotta have the hardback ones to preserve my childhood for generations to come lol

  • Not particularly keen on amazon au anymore - last two orders have literally been the items put in a plastic satchel without protective packaging and thrown on my doorstep by the courier from 5m away.

  • Available again at same price for backorder….Usually dispatched within 1 to 4 weeks.

  • Does it come in a Tin?
