Smart Air Con & Device Controllers

Hi Guys

Have a ducted aircon and looking to control it through my phone. I have read a bit about Sensibo, Tado Smart AC, and Broadlink RM4 devices. Is anyone using any of these or other devices?

Also, researching smart plugs and lights to control my lights/tv/other devices.

Any suggestions about converting the house into a smart home will be appreciated.

Thank you.

  • I’ve got a BroadLink pro controlling my dumb aircon and curtain. Works pretty well, though the curtain occasionally misses one of the commands (it is in another room though).
If your thinking of automating your entire house, have a look at Home Assistant. It’s great for combining all types and brands of smart and dumb devices and making them work how you want them to.

    Hi mate,

I have had 3 Broadlink RF mini. I've knocked that down to two - both control a Midea 10yo air con (one split, one ducted).

I use Home Assistant to run my smart house - the only way to go. One install, one integration (Broadlink), one custom add on (SmartIR) later and I have my controls available in a web browser on any device - one more integration and I can ask google to control them.

    Too easy!

    • Agree with brendanheyu. If you don't want to be at the whim of cloud providers (and instead be at the whim of a for-profit company working with an open source community), Home Assistant is probably the best way to go.

If you like working with electronics, ESPHome would also be a good way to integrate pretty much anything you like. It's what I'm considering for smartening my home.

Interesting…… If only you listed the brand/model of your ducted unit people might be able to help more.

Many units can have a add on 'wifi' controller from the OEM. But hard to tell without the Brand/Model.

Assuming your ducted unit is controlled via a IR remote and not a hard wired wall panel like MOST ducted units, then yes these work.

They are 'one way' only devices, so if you change the AC settings outside of the app (using the IR remote for example), then the app will get out of sync.

The Sensibo does detect IR signals, and does a reasonable job of keeping in touch with manual remote status. This also shows up in the history log for the device.

True, the Sensibo does detect IR signals, but its 100% depends on the placement and capturing those signals etc. So its not a true 2 way control device like a OEM wifi module for example and can get out of sync.

  • Have a broadlink pro 4 to control my 2x ceiling fans in the bedrooms of my apartment.Works a treat! Broadlink is in the living room, through 2 double brick walls, and hits the bedrooms 10m away!

  • I use Sensibo and I am happy with it.
If you get no response here about setting up your smart home,
you may have to walk into Jaycar or somewhere like that to pick their brain.
