In-Store Cashback Issues with Cashrewards

Has anyone been able to claim cashback from cashrewards with your credit card? I recently went to one with a cashback and the claim got rejected.

They said it was because I paid with EFTPOS, but that's not true.

On the receipt it says

"Tyro Payments EFTPOS"

then underneath that it has

"MasterCard Citi Credit"
card number same as what I have saved in cashrewards

I simply paid by tapping with pay wave and now they're saying I paid with EFTPOS. What else was I supposed to do? Had already replied back to them but how else can I dispute this?

  • What else was I supposed to do?

    • Insert card.
    • enter PIN incorrectly 3 times.
    • sign for transaction.
    • -Insert card
      -Select Credit
      -Enter Correct PIN

      • so paywave is not considered credit?

        • Sorry, was trying to point out that there is no 3 times wrong PIN and you get to sign for transaction.

  • Tyro processes tap transactions via "Least Cost Routing". In your case via EFTPOS rather than Mastercard

    • but how would I know what that business uses? I should've asked them what they use before tapping the card? So this business is just going to use a cashback as a bait and then no one would get the cashback because this processing type is going to make everyone ineligible

      • Perhaps ask Cash Rewards. You haven't provided any details about the CashRewards deal you were chasing.

        Not every business uses Tyro.

        • no particular deals. Just an in store cashback rather than anything online https://www.cashrewards.com.au/in-store/offers

          • @macr0hard: If your card was a credit card - should have been processed via Mastercard. If debit card and Tap & Go - via EFTPOS.

            • @Baysew: It was a credit card. In the receipt it says "MasterCard Citi Credit". I thought I only needed to tap, didn't know I had to insert it.

              • @macr0hard:

Cashrewards In-Store Offers are available to all members who link their valid Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card to their Cashrewards account.

                • use your linked Visa or Mastercard card to pay for your purchase in-store at the participating store; and select ‘Credit’ or the payWave option to complete your transaction.

I can see your issue here! And as you used a Credit Card, should have gone via Mastercard.

                • @Baysew: ok, so select "Credit" or payWave right, I did payWave, so it was just a tap. So this is an issue with the merchant, not me?

                  • @macr0hard: It is an issue with Cash Rewards as per their T & C's

  • Watching this thread with interest. I've used this at Caltex when it first started and it worked.
